I suppose they would, yeah.
Its just when you see a pub on US TV they seem a lot different to the pubs over here. The people there etc.
Literally just got back from my local..... 4 americans in there. middle aged. Playing board games on the table and drinking?!?!?
I mean seriously, who plays board games in a pub, especially one which us youngsters drink in!
I used to play Chess with a mate in the local from old job when we finished at a 4 on a Friday whilst waiting for others to join an hour later. Was great in the summer![]()
The Queen Vic, the Woolpack and the Rovers Return are a lot different to the pubs I go to as well though.
That just depends on where you live. Living in Manchester I never used to go out until about 11pm.Yeah, though I think they're used to going out later.
Got some new american neighbours the other month who seemed massively shocked I was going out as early as half 8.
Back to the OP, of course bars are a social place to meet where ever you are. Haven't you ever seen Cheers?

Yeah and then I think oh pubs are the same, then you see other shows where pubs are very rough and full of bikers or alcoholics and you think hmmm.

hmm, thats fair enough... but we are talking about random americans playing from 7.30 till lock-in time (was still playing when i left 20 mins ago)
The game was like scrabble with numbers and no playing board...![]()
The impression I get is American bars attract more singles on their own than in the UK, i.e. certain bars will effectively be 'pickup joints', with single men/women going there on their own or with a close buddy with the intention of pulling. In the UK we seem to see pubs as more of a general 'warmup' area for drinking and chatting with friends, with anything else being a bonus. It tends to be clubs where people are looking to hookup.
This may also explain why (judging by tv/film), sitting at the bar seems a lot more common in the US. In the UK people tend to order at the bar and then either take drinks elsewhere in the pub or kinda stand around nearby, unless it's a real 'local' where everyone knows each other.
I often play chess or cards down the local... nothing wrong with that imo
Heck - back in Lincoln there's this pub where someone rediscovered circular chess & it was very unusual to go in there and there not be a chess set on a table.
