Well have been doing some overclocking lately and it seems that I am not getting consistent volts along the 12v rail of my psu causing the bios to reset which is annoying to say the least. The long and short of which is that i am going to be getting rid of my current PSU a cheap OCZ 600w jobbies and getting a better one. The psu that I have at the moment is LOUD as I am sure anyone who has this psu will testify, so what is really appealing is a silent one I know that the corsairs are quiet but after doing some more delving i read many reviews and the Akasa AK-P010FG-BK 1000W PowerMax PSU
has gotten some rave reviews also despite being non-modular. I have taken the lower fan out of my Antec P182 case and am sure that with a little wangling I could get any PSU into the case that I wished what do you guys recon would be a silent or near silent model with solid 12v rails? System spec as follows:

Q6600 G0 stepping, Ultra 120 Extreme Cooler
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3 Board
8800 GTX card with HR-03 Plus cooler
2 gig OCZ ddr2 8500 memory
Antec P182 Case
320 gig disk
1 dvd-rw
7 fans in total (4 through a controller)
Several USB devices such as kb and mouse etc drawing power?

I would like to upgrade and not have to worry about needing to upgrade in the future I generally upgrade the PSU every few years so I want one that is going to last a good few upgrades. cost not really an issue, Also I need a bit of power left over so that if I decide to water cool in the future there is plenty of headroom left in the PSU to cover it.

What do you guy’s recon would be my best bet?

corsair HX520 will power that without a problem and its silent too maybe hx620 if W/C is added as i dont know how much power a W/C kit draws

the old tagans are exceptionally quiet also, i havent played with the newer ones however.

there are a few fully passive psu;s but only down in the 300-400w bands... you could try to so a custom WC setup for your psu, if you have the ability.

My HX520 setup is more silent than a laptop :)

Shoo owl shoo.

Also your sig is too large [/Zefan] :p

Anyway back on topic, +1 too the HX520 its a great psu. I own one and its great.

a lot off votes here for the corsairs however as a balanced opinion i have both a corsair hx 620 w psu and a fsp 7oow epsilon , and after much playing around in the same system i ended up using the fsp psu . just my opinion but i think it is definately quieter than the corsair but not modular unfortunately :)

I have a 500w Zalman modular cooler like this

Zalman cooler

It is silent!

Runs an overvolted GO 6600 and 8800GT with easy.

Lots of juicy modular power!

Keeps cable runs very tidy, all black coated and wrapped cabling!

Thanks for the replies guys as i expected i will probly go for the 620w Corsair was hoping for a few more suggestions but it seems i knew the answer all along (very wizard of Oz) thanks guys will order the corsair in two weeks time and let you know what the results are.

Cheers!

haha off topic, but i remember lots of "hyper 520 here / hyper +1" a few years ago, and befor that "get a Q-tec, cheap and awesom" ;) - i think the corsairs are far ahead of both of these, but still an amusing similarity

Yeah, apparantly those new Zalman heatpipe cooled PSUs are the quietest.

The fan only kick in when necassery (under load), since the heatpipe is capable of cooling most of the time.

This is from the reviews I've read, so I don't know personally. Pretty good prices too. 600W version goes for around ~£70. Pretty efficient from what I gather as well.

There are many quiet power supplies out there, including the few others mentioned in this thread however the Corsair (actually a Seasonic derivative) is cited in reviews & recomendations as the psu of choice over at http://www.silentpcreview.com/ , pretty much the definitive source of information on quiet & silent pcs.

Quieter than this and you're looking at unconventional/fanless designs, all of which have they're own limitations and drawbacks.

HOLD IT!!!!!

People say Corsair 520w, I have one and it idels only taking about 160W and is not silent. Its the loudest thing in my system!! My system is water cooled with 5 yate loon Low speed fans on a fan controller, even at 1200 rpm loons the psu is still loudest part of pc. My pc 3 meters from my bed under a desk and I can hear psu at night with pc idleing
