18k to spend,2nd car,must be fast

.... if you have 18k in cash anyways, then you can probably afford the running costs of a car that costs that much (m3, s4 etc etc)

Figure another 1-2k a year on maintenance from that point on.

Didn't see if he had the cash though, or if some would be financed?

Double the higher estimate and you're closer to an acceptable budget for running an M5 with no warranty. £1-2k might be enough if nothing goes wrong.

I did a lot of research when I was thinking of buying one...

Part of the reason the car is cheap is the running costs, those who can comfortably afford them can afford a newer one.

Would an M5 cost any more than an M3 to put right if it went wrong though.

The same could be said of any motor that costs 18k second hand, that cost upwards of 40k new.

Yep, extra cylinders, more complex suspension etc, the unique parts are more expensive. The M5 is a fair bit more costly to run than the M3

Not to the same extent. A 530i is a lot cheaper to run (for example) than an M5, and they can cost as much new. A 530d even more so.

I think a good strategy is not to buy a car second hand, that you couldnt afford to maintain if you had bought it new, which is said a lot - and makes great sense (taking the initial purchase price out of it).

Indeed, although it's worth noting that maintaining a new car is significantly cheaper than an older one much of the time, especially with various manufacturer service packages available.

I cant see any real BMW drivers giving the advice that a remapped 320 is possibly in any way comparable to an M3! ;)

Personally, after having a bit of unintentional rear end slipping action in my e46 M3 a month ago, has told me that to go alongside an engine producing a MASSIVE amount of power, you need equally competant brakes, suspension, tyres, differentials, stability and traction control (if your into that etc) to actually keep you on the road if your doing anything other than driving in a straight line down an empty motorway ..... Even if a 320 got a big boost in power from a remap, i'd be worried id put it in a ditch with vastly inferior '320 spec kit' that you still have in that car. Its hard not to get caught up in playing online numbers games where people look at BHP figures and remaps and exhausts trying to take a bog standard cheaper spec car and bolting on bits in some kind of effort to bring them up to spec with their pricier cousins. Granted theres a lot you can do with aftermarket kit but with this advice about remapping beemer 330's or doing screw modifications on old peugeots and wonder what the end product car actually is like to DRIVE? Can a 335i with the same kind of engine output as an M3 actually do the same thing on a track or a back road that the M3 can?

Im a huge alfa fan, having come from a GTV before my M3, but until they bring out a RWD car i can only ever think of them as very stylish everyday cars ... not 'weekend motors' i dont think.

Who said 320  I said 330...

Audi RS4? Is it in the price range?

You could get the old one for that price easy, they are getting on a bit though. The new one won't reach 18k for at least 5 years I reckon.

The thing that people always seem to miss in threads is this.

We'll take the M5. Undoubtedly a stunning car. Almost certainly where my cash would go. But you know what? I don't need to ask the forum what car to get. I love M5's, and the running costs are justifiable for this reason.

Generally speaking, if you need to ask the internet whether you should buy an M3 or a Civic Type-R, you are not the sort of person who will be able to justify spending £18,000 on a 5+ year old 5 litre V8 BMW 5 Series with the running costs it attracts.

If you can justify that much cash simply running a car, you tend to be a bit of an enthusiast and thus able to know roughly what you want before you start looking..

I want that so bad. I love WR1's. Nice plate too, would suit me :p

doesn't someone on here own that plate?

Nope they dont. There are only 2 CSL owners on here. Gibbo has M88 CSL iirc and Tax Evader is the other owner. I cant recall him owning the M3 CSL plate.

Was'nt there a story floating around where the M3 CSL was on an old Volvo or Saab of some sorts. BMW bought the car and plate off an old guy for a huge amount when they annouced the CSL?
