Hi all. I'm currently sat in my bedroom building my new PC with a mate. We've got the Tuniq Tower in with no problems at all and we're about to install the VGA Cooler but we're a little stuck. It didn't come with a fan but a lot of people are talking about using a 92mm/120mm fan on it. Is this absolutly neccesary? (We realise we're idiots). We have one spare Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 if need be but looking in the case with the monster that is the Tuniq are we going to be able to fit all this in? Is there any other hints and tips for using this combination of coolers?

Thanks for your time.

it takes the heat off the card's chips and keeps on the metal parts of the cooler, it then disapates (sp?) into the air inside your case, when you put a fan on the cooler, it gives better cooling because the heat is pushed off the metal quicker allowing the temp of the cooler to stay lower

did it make sense , it made sense in my head :p

thanks for the reply. how does it get it's cool coolingness powerness ability without a fan?

Legendary line.

It just cools it passively with the ambient air movement in the case. If your case gets hot, the cooling ability is limited.

:)

thanks for clearing that up guys! One more thing. We're faced with the taske of taking the Nvidia cooling stuff off the graphics card itself and we're not too sure exactly what we're meant to unscrew. Do both the plastic casing (the bit with the paint job) and the grey metal plate it sits on both have to be taken off or just the former? Thanks :D.

I got one of these but for my x1800xt. Bit fiddley to install but they are amazing. With a fan, I got my temps down from 80-90 degrees with a stock cooler to 30-40 degrees. My stock cooler was completely clogged with dust at the time though. Definately worth it's money.

I'm currently using one of these coolers on a GTS, as you can see from the picture below:

As you can see, I've been running it passively for a few months, with it having an idle temp of approx 66'c. I wouldn't recommend you try and overclock if you are going to use it passively. I've also got it mounted it so it curves round the card, so the fins were fairly close to the exhaust fan at the back of my case.

I unscrewed everything, and don't rush. You'll have loads of small screws, and discover you've probably unsrewed more than you needed to, but then you can just reattach the screws to the original cooler.
The most frustrating part is fitting the unit while trying not to knock off the small aluminium memory heatsinks. Make sure you clean these off before trying to attach them!

You don't need a fan, I have one though. I've got the fan mounted so it blows air into the cooler and onto the card.

I had the fan blowing hot air but the card would always get too hot, having the air sucking into the cooler keeps the temperature down.

I've taken all of the screws from the underside of the card, and all of the visible screws on the black casing, but I still can't get it off. It wobbles around a bit, but it feels like something in the middle of the card is keeping it from coming off. Have no ideas what to do now, as I can't see any more screws that could be removed..

Yeah, the ones that are holding the fan down? They're out.. Definitley feels like it's something in the middle, as I can rotate it slightly side to side

I've just fitted a 92mm fan to mine as well (last few days), with it pulling air away from the fins. Has dropped the idle temp by 10-15'c. Reason I hadn't done so before was because the reason I originally changed the heatsink was to quieten my computer. Used a 17Db NoiseBlocker fan, and I genuinely can't tell if it's working without looking at it!

It could be. There's definitely absolutly no screws on the opposite side of the card so i don't see what could be attaching it, but it feels like its held firmly in place by something smack bang in the middle (it pivots). I'm tempted to tear it off but at the same time im paranoid of breaking it. So frustrating. Any more advice?

Right well my legend of a mate managed to pull it off, and now we're faced with the task of removing this grey goo stuff from it.. How did you do that?

I just wiped mine off with tissue, then used a pin to clean between the gaps (carefully!). The best way is to use some TIM cleaner, but I didn't as I'm not into extreme cooling. Just don't reapply too much TIM when you are fitting the new heatsink.
