A camera for motorsport

If you think Donington is great then you'd be blown away by Knockhill. Very little in the way of restriction, and if you sit anywhere other than the hairpin you can see 90% of the rest of the track. You're so close to the cars too. You can get some excellent shots even with a compact. I found myself having to ditch my 55-200mm and strap the kit 18-55mm on my D40x. First event I'd taken the camera too, so not many keepers, and I was miles off with the exposure (I really didn't have a clue).

i got the same sort of questions as multi... i really want to get a 400d and a good starter lense for using at brands hatch. we mainly sit less than 10meters from the cars so im thinking just the standard 18-55 IS lense would be fine? or not really?

i also like plane spotting so the lense would idealy be suited to both.

currently use S3IS which has a x12 zoom but rarely use full zoom.

A 70-200 F4 is fine, depending on where you will be of course.

The following where taken with it and a 350d

as long as the light is half decent then it's worth thinking about the sigma 50-500, I use one on my D70 for rugby occasionally and it works well.

Im going for a 100-400L this year, bit pricey but I think so worth it :D

400D + 70-300 USM IS perhaps? My 70-300 IS is very very good IMO. Sharpest lens I had up until I got my nifty fifty.

a lot of people overlook the Canon 400mm F5.6 prime, one of the best lenses they ever made, with the exception that it doesn't have IS, but if your panning IS doesn't really help.. Some of the top bird photographers swear by this lens, its bonkers sharp and can be picked up for around £650 from evil bay..
If you think you'll always be using the long end of the 100-400 you might want to consider the 400 5.6, as the 100-400 is soft at each end.

loving some of these shots lads
I hope to be getting out and shooting some racing action soon
I use a basic 350D with the 70-300 IS glass which does a decent job
love the shots tom, and mohinder with the bikes in the air
the rally shots look good and crisp but I'd run them on a longer shutter speed to keep the wheels in motion, love the colours though and the dust spray
very jealous though, need to get out there and try it out
the nearest I've been to that sort of thing is only probs some karting

I weighed this up. For me it was the 300mm F/4 L IS and then the 1.4x tc to go with it...gives you the range and higher optics if you believe the reviews.

Not got a 1.4x tc attached as yet so can't confirm myself.
