watched the repeat last night! i never watched extras religiously but it was great

I often wonder how much of the comedy comes from Stephen Merchant, I would bet a great amount of it.

Gervais is never as funny without him, I just view him as the actor and Stephen Merchant as the real comedy writer.

I think they are each other's muse to be honest. I sat down to watch the show and I nearly I had to stop, it got so sad and was expecting straight laughs. Good on them though, it was a lovely little story. I still think one of my favourites is the one with Daniel Radcliffe in though (with the condom) -- just had me in stiches.
