Do customs search coaches?

My ex was dutch & went over in a car quite a lot... only ever got pulled over by customs once and that was going uk->netherlands not the other way. All they wanted me to do was open the boot - didn't even search it. I guess I don't look shifty enough and/or he just had a quota to meet lol

As for coaches... I think it would depend on the clientel the coach is carrying, but i didn't see many coaches get searched.

I think, staff and time issues aside everything should be searched with massive penalties for any contraband etc. Penalties up to and including life imprisonment.

Been to the Continent many times by coach and have both been searched and allowed through with not even a glance. Guess it just depends on if they can be bothered or not.

And how many people would be happy with paying an extra £200 per person just to be able to afford the necessary staff and equipment to be able to search everyone.

It's nice to think it would be possible, but realistically, you would probably find more contraband searching everyone outside your local club/disco. And a million times more illegal stuff comes in via the thousands of miles of our coastlines via boat (and there are even less customs boats than there are customs people at the ports)

lol. oh really! what, oh righty one, would you deem an acceptable contraband to invoke this life sentance?

I was on a coach trip once where there were about 10 gospel singers, who for some reason, apart from buying chocolates, decided to buy several industrial sized boxes of Bold washing powder each.

We got stopped and when the customs guy opened the coach locker, he was confronted by all this washing powder and a bike that had neatly ripped a hole in one of them, so there was white powder everywhere. Took a good few hours of searching that did.

On the two trips ive taken with school on a coach, we didnt get searched, just a bloke came through and checked our passports.

These were coachloads of kids though, not the most likely suspects for drug smuggling :D

Here's a tip for you. When travelling through customs, never ever have a bag of the sherbet from a "Sherbet Fountain" in your pocket. I hate liquorice so used to empty the sherbet out and give the liquorice stick to my Sister.

Definitely and its always my lady who they search.
Every time we go through customs or through the metal detector they always take her to the side.
We were on a coach coming off a ferry, customs came on and headed straight for her.
She went on the Chunnel and was singled out there also.
She looks like a normal 48 year old mother.

I am a coach driver who drives abroad, They do search the coach when you go out and show your passports through imigration, Not very well though.

I walked up the aisle of my coach before the customs got on and found a canister of cs gas in the seat nets.(they only check the drivers and crews passports so we dont go through imigration)
If the search found anything they would have all the passengers stuff and the coach in a shed and searched properlly.

You very rarely get pulled into the shed and searched but they do sometimes do spot checks

I buy washing powder and beer cos its cheaper out there and i have a lot more space than the passengers get, Its really good fun to watch people argue when they get back home and fight over there duty free stuff. (tip take a black marker and write your name on your duty free)
