Hi all,

Just clocked my system to 3.0Ghz, all ive done is up the FSB i havent changed any voltages or anything like that as im a n00b and dont want to blow anything up! anyway temps are as follows

idle
42, 39, 36, 39

full load for 15 mins
59, 58, 54, 57

Are these temps ok? is there any way i can improve my clock? or lower my temps or both?

Thanks

Rob

your idle temps do seem in line with my B3 quad with a cooler very similar to the Zalman CNPS8700-LED CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775), mine has no led fan and is only partly copper with i think no heatpipes

is it a g0 stepping?

Also, out of interest, did you have to update your bios to get the motherboard to recognise the chip? Reason being that i'm going to be putting a q6600 in my board next week and i can't be bothered to update the bios tbh.

I found on my IP35 board the Q6600 G0 was giving out the wrong temps until I upgraded the bios then it got a lot more realistic (and made me turn it down from 3.6Ghz).

But those temps are around the level I'm getting now.

Also I'm funning 800 memory so when I got to 3Ghz I had to turn the memory speed down to keep it happy. The stock voltage worked fine though.

No i didnt have to update the bios, will that help?, also ive no idea if its a go stepping q6600 or not :S can i update the motherboard through windows? ive heard that it can cause board faliour!

You NEVER want to update the bios through windows, it's the main cause of dead boards. But it's also not essential. You just might be getting the wrong readings, however they sound right to me.

To check if you have the G0 version of the Q6600, just run CPU-Z and in one of the boxes on the from screen you see the stepping as G0.

I would suggest MagicalTrevor idle at 20' is a bit dodgy unless the ambient room temp is like 10'C. So it sounds like you may need a bios update. You should only see a temp below room temp if you're using water or phase cooling. This is how I knew my bios was giving me the wrong readings. I was say around 28'C when Idle, when the room was about the same... with the bios upgrade it now says about 35'C which is much more realistic.

Edit:

I take it it's the Abit IP35 you're using. If so then this is a very handy links page:
