Evening people! :)

me and my girlfriend are thinking of taking a long weekend break to italy towards the end of february (around half term time 22nd-24th..ish) thing is, not sure on which part of italy to go to yet!
does anybody have any ideas or experiences of this country that they would like to share? or any advise they could offer in booking and travel around the country etc? we're mainly interested in seeing the sights!, shopping and just generally chilling out! :)

also any advice on prices of hotels/flights would be great. ive had a look on some known websites and they seem to go from around 250-500 per person for 4 days... this will be the first holiday ive booked (on my own!) lol, so any guidlines would be appreciated!

many thanks :)

Went to Rome and Venice last year. Rome was nice but didn't live up to my expectations - still a lot of sights though. Worth a visit, but the 4 days we spent there were a bit too much - might be ok if you rent a car and visit the surrounding towns. If you do decide to go to Rome, you can get a cheap Ryanair flight to Venice.

Venice on the other hand was amazing. Expected it to be smelly, busy and tacky - it's awesome though, an absolutely stunning place. You can see it all in 2 days however, 3 if you visit the surrounding islands.

Doh, just re-read your opening post.

I would probably suggest Venice for 2 days and one of the towns on the mainland in from Venice for a couple of days. Maybe Milan might be a good bet.

You can get between the cities fairly easily by train, but longer distances are best done by budget airlines. Ryanair and Easyjet do lots of flights to Italy. I found the hotels using lastminute.com (if the hotel has a website check the price on that) - take a good look through people's comments on lastminute before booking somewhere.

Went Rome last year, I thought it was a great place with loads to see and keep you occupied for 3/4 days. Would recommend it for visit.

Sort out some cheap Ryan Air flights and then a hotel off expedia (or similar site), I found the flight/hotel combo deals not very good.

Angus-Higgins (who sometimes posts here [in a convoluted fashion]) once mentioned he remembered pi to so many decimal places, the the last seven numbers of what he remembered sometimes get stuck in his head. I put those numbers in my sig so if he sees it he gets reminded of the numbers and goes a little bit more crazy :)
lol. :D

Any other places worth looking into?

whats the highlights of the different cities? places within the cities that are worth visiting :)

Cheers

Lake Garda is an amazing place!! id reccomend that , also another vote for Venice

Amalifi coats is very nice, you can also take a short boat trip to Capri. Close to Pompei & overlooks Mount Vesuvius

deffinatly like the sound of that !! very much into volcanoes etc!

seems like Venice is a popular choice, found a few websites with tourist info on there too which is quite good

Ive been to Sorrento 4-5 times now and still want to go back again this year... such a lovely place, nice people, good food and some great landscapes, plus your only a short train ride from Pomey or Herculanium, or a quick ferry ride from the Isle of Capris! a 30min train ride will get you to Naples for a days shopping. Or you can hire a boat for the day and blast around the coast, see the grottos or the Amalfi coast.

I'd recommend going to Verona it's a beautiful place and there be lot's o history. Rome is too crowded IMO and Venice is all good except in the height of summer when the place reeks of stagnent water!

I'd second that - we went there two years ago and it was probably the best holiday i've ever had. Sorrento is fantastic and Rome is only a few hours away by coach.

I loved Rome, Verona, Venice and Sienna. Didnt think much of Milan, Pisa and Florence was rather over rated IMO.

It would have to be Venice for a short break.

It is lovely, expensive though to eat out well, but if you are going for a few days that doesnt really matter.
I went with a friend backpacking just to see the place and we both hated it personally, cheapest thing we could do was buy a 6 pack a load of bread and cheese and sit on the canals so :P

Dont go to Milan though, i also found it rather boring there, and if you have the missus with you she will want to go shopping this more money being spent!

Venice for me, but TBH i could rather think of better places to go for romantic weekend.
