Well been thinking about getting the Canon 50mm F1.8 Mk II for some time now well decided to grab a brand new one for £59 inc postage from a certain site UK seller to. :D:D & a 52mm UV filter aswell.

So with having L glass im spoiled ;) what can i expect from this lens also be good if anybody with it can post a couple of pics that they shot with it

Excellent little lens...and £ for £ probably one of the best quality lenses you can buy!! I just got some extension tubes today for £22.49 in the sales at the Trafford Centre, and have rediscovered mine :)

Theres a few having a little photo meeting at Salford Quays on Thursday evening Info here if you would like to try it out in low light :)

I would love to go, but I work Silly hours ie nights so can't attend im affraid i even have to work tonight which pee me off no end lol.

When the lens arrives i post some shots on here with it hopefully i get a good copy fingers crossed.

If you put any stead in MTF as a measure of lens quality (after all, sharpness isn't everything) it's one of the finest consumer lenses Canon produce. It's outperformed only by things like the hideously expensive 85mm f/1.2L or 200mm f/1.8L, and is certainly sharper than even expensive L zooms.

This lens is my workhorse.

Apart from looking and feeling like a toy lens, the focusing ring being a joke, and slow AF compared to expensive lenses, none of these things matter in my shooting scenarios, so its my most used lens.

i have one and i think its a crap lens but is capable of producing some very sharp photos

wouldnt bother with a filter for it though

Hey,

This is a couple of my shots in really low light on the nifty fifty:

I've taken a lot of my best shots with this lens. Admittedly I've recently deleted both folders containing all the photos that I never got around to doing anything with, which pleased me NO END, mistaking them for my "not mine" folder where I keep shots that impress me.

:(

It just a habit of mine to stick a filter on the end of all my lenses i mean it only cost me £5 for the filter.

Also great pics rich what were these shot at F1.8? or did you stop down alittle.

I've bought this lense but possibly haven't used it enough. I'm still learning which lenses in my rather limited collection are best suited for particular settings.

For instance, yesterday I learned that without a tripod, I can't use the 18-55mm kit lens to take a landscape shot in overcast weather, it's simply too dark for a hand held shot and opening up the aperture for as much light as possible just results in DoF issues. I'm going to try the 'nifty fifty' next time!

Ixon - According to the exifs, it looks like they were taking at f/1.8.

As Messiah points out, to achieve more DoF you will need to stop the 50mm down anyway and at the same aperture it will let as little light in. Bottom line is for landscapes you want to use a tripod either way, especially when overcast.

That said, provided 50mm is the focal length you want, the 'nifty fifty' used at say f8 will produce better image quality than the kit lens at f8, so I'd still get it.

They are taken at 1.8 - sometimes i use the 2.2-2.5 if i want a bit more depth - but I prefer a faster shutter speed so I stick to the 1.8.

It might be worth your while to stop down to f2 though? 'Budget' lenses always seem to be a lot sharper when you're not pushing them (i.e. using them wide open), not to mention it might be slightly easier to focus. Those two shots were taken at 1/640 and 1/80 (quite a difference!), surely if you aim for around 1/50 and stop down a bit you might see that?

Anyway, it's just a suggestion and is probably how i'd go about using that lens. (Every shot i see from it makes me want one!) :)
