Obviously I can't speak for your friends or work colleagues but I'm convinced that all of my friends and colleagues have been sincere when they wished me a "happy new year" and I was certainly sincere when I said it to them. If I didn't mean it, I wouldn't say it :confused:

I should clarify what I mean, I wasn't talking about friends, I was talking about anyone you speak to on the phone at work, business associates etc. Not close friends or family. Is estate agent x or that random shop assistant really wishing I have a happy new year? Will he remember me two months down the line thinking, "Ah, I hope Sam's having a really good new year still". No, he won't, he doesn't give a stuff.

You do have a point - however, just because I don't remember about some of the people I say it to and have little chance of knowing what sort of year they have, doesn't mean I'm not being sincere. I do genuinely hope everybody has a good year (with a couple of exceptions). I would imagine the majority of people are the same (or perhaps my natural tendency to think the best about people is making me appear naive again?).

He might, you know. He might even be thinking about you in six months time, when he's watching you through your curtains.
 
I think its just fake a lot of the time, i say it to people who know i genuinly mean it, and i know mean it back..

Otherwise its just weird.
