hd2900xt 1024mb gdd4

If you're thinking of buying one then dont they are a massive downgrade from your current card and they have better sucking power than dyson hoovers and they are not good cards really.

2900 isnt that bad, they do run hotter then a lot of other cards but I dont find the noise a bother personally.
If you overclock and ramp up the volts then its going to be running the fan at full and then it might start being irratating I guess.

Presently my room is so cold it runs at just over idle when in bf2, inaudible in a firefight :)

What game do you need that much memory for, otherwise there isnt much point in a sideways swap

I hope you are meaning if that card was a GTS 512mb version?, as if it was a GTS320 then it's no downgrade. Not an upgrade either though if it's a 640mb model.

Without AA or less AA then the 2900Pro overclocked is still a great card. Moving to the GTX hasn't blown me away but has given me a better experience than the ATI card but if I didn't enjoy/use AA/AF then I'd still be using the 2900 :).

The new 7.12 drivers from ATI seem pretty good. I only tested a few games out and everything was running a lot smoother than before. I only had the drivers in 2 days before my new rig came so I didn't try many things out but World in Conflict as well as Pro Evolution 2008 (Close up replays) were MUCH smoother.

Well were memory is no limitation then it aint no upgrade from a GTS 320 but he has a GTS 512mb. I'm surprised you have not been blown away coming from a 2900 to a GTX It certainly would blow me away by miles.

I didn't use AA or hardly any when using the 2900Pro so my FPS were excellent. Timeshift and Crysis did suffer a bit without AA but this was on my old rig and haven't tried the 2900Pro on this yet (hmmmm :)). World in Conflict as well as a good few other titles ran superbly on the 2900 (CoD4, UT3, COH and lots more). When adding AA then the GTX does blow me away but we all know how good R600 is without AA and we all love high IQ gaming so that's where it failed time after time. Timeshift ran like butter on my old system with my m8's GTX and the 2900Pro just wasn't good enough and I had to drop a little IQ and 1 resolution to get the experience I needed.

I thought Timeshift ran good on everything, I have it all maxed at 1680x1050 and it never goes below 60, but then again I dont use AA in timeshift because I cant enable it in NVCP and I aint messing with Nhancer crap and the other one.

I never tried to force AA with the GTX or the 2900Pro. It just ran superbly on the GTX but for the 2900Pro I had to drop one resolution and turn off Parallel Shadows to make it run as good as the GTX. I think a shadow option was greyed out for the AMD card also.

The game still looked and played great but I knew that with the GTX that I could have a better looking game at higher resolutions. CoD4 with AA on the 2900 was a no go also. This was with 1gb of DDR400 @ 466, 2.8Ghz X2 CPU and over 6 months garbage piled into my OS so it wasn't the best environment out for the 2900. I might give the 2900Pro another run for it's money and see how it performs with better hardware to run it and on a clean OS.

nothing wrong with the 2900. about the heat i think it depends on the case air flow, mine doesn't get that hot, (46c ida, 69-71c load) at 800/825. i agree when using AA the performance drops but thats same with the 3800 series also.

Nothing wrong for you maybe, you'd be blown away if you tried an 8800 series.
i know nividia are good but i wouldn't touch nvidia ever.

also i don't use AA so that why the 2900 is ok for me. the 2900 is up there with the 8800 when using no AA

The biggest problem for me with my 2900 XT were the drivers. You have to wait weeks or even months(bioshock dx10) to get decent performance with the newest games.

Why wont you ever touch NV? You must have a real reason and not just coz you like red or something.

Even with no AA my 8800GT is faster than my old 2900XT.

i don't like the drivers.. also its my choice and option what i like and want. nobody can say i must not only go for ati.

Trying not to get involved in the 8800/2900 arguement... (It's not a great one really, unless you're cranking up AA, both are awesome cards)
Did you ever try for an overclock out of that Phenom Gareth?
