at the moment i have a e2140 cpu in my rig, its sitting at 2.67ghz but can do 3ghz I just need to lap the heatsink. Is it worth me getting a q6600 to replace it? The rest of my system is 4gb ballistix 8500 and 8800gtx on p5k deluxe.

I'm kinda sceptical because it runs everything fine, but ive been told i'd notice the difference going to a q6600 and clocking it up. What games would actually take advantage of it?

thanks.

you have a good board to overclock a quad, id say the additional clock you would get from a q6600 g0 would make the largest difference, let alone the fact it’s a quad.

Bob, the Q6600 is a great CPU but so is the E2140. If I am reading this correctly I take it you have some spare cash to blow on your rig?

If your into benchmarks and stuff like that you may well enjoy the quad but if you just get on with performing tasks and gaming then I'm not sure you will really see £150 pounds of extra peformance?

There is some new chips coming from INTEL soon and they will totally 'outmode' the existing G0 Q6600's, pretty tempting to wait it out I think, I guess it depends if your the type of enthusiast that upgrades once every two years or you don't mind swapping out a CPU for a new one after just 2 months?

Thanks for the comments, I've seen two sides of the coin here some recommendations to get the q6600 others to wait it out. Really I just like to upgrade my rig when I feel it requires the extra performance, a few games I have right now can 'struggle' if thats the right word on my system at top settings (1900x1200 aa/af) they are Eq2 (which generally has spots of lag on new zones, this however may be common) and supreme commander forged alliance (but supcom runs super fine) I read both are heavily cpu intensive games.

Apart from that well, I guess a lot of it is driver based, whilst on vista I did encounter a few games that were up and down whilst xp doesnt seem to have this problem...

Those new quads are being released March right? So probably late March for them to be readily available?

It's tempting to wait, but how much are these quads likely to be?

Around 50 pounds more than current Q6600 prices for the new Q9450 yorkie.
The new dual core wolfdales look pretty cool if they clock as well as initial tests show.

Its worth noting new Q6600 G0 steppings are clocking like mad at them moment, quite a few people are running 4ghz on air.

I saw some good gains in minimum FPS (10+) with a Q6600 at 2.7ghz over my E2140 at 3Ghz, so if you play that game you might benefit. The extra cache of the Q6600 seems to help in some games, but not others, but overall it IS a faster CPU all round than the E2140, even clock for clock.

It's questionable whether it's worth the £110+ cost to change though.

I have a e6300 on a ASUS P5K Premium "Black Pearl" and Arctic Freezer Pro 7.

I'm waiting for the new quad core yorkies to arrive. I feel its not a good time to buy q6600 as the price is likely to be dropped to make way for the new 45nm QC.

It should be a simple drop and replace :)

Don't forget you will likely acheive a higher overclock with the Q6600 due to the low multi on the new Penryn based quads.

I would keep your existing chip for now and either buy a Penryn when they come out, or a 2nd hand Q6600.

With only around 400MHZ clock for clock between penryn and Q6600 you need the higher multi chips to do them justice.

So 3.2ghz quad penryn is like 3.6ghz Q6600.

Q9450 has a 8x multi so to achive 4ghz you will need a mobo that will clock to 500FSB with a Quad.

A big ask on current mobos 24/7 If the price is to high many will keep their 3.6ghz+ Q6600's

So how about 3.6GHz on the Q9450 (8x450) is that asking a lot of the chipset?

If so you get an effective 4GHz Q6600 worth of performance? sounds pretty good to me :)

[edit] still I understand the 'wanting' of a pure 4GHz clock, I find that pretty tasty also!
