Please sign Petition to save Mums School :)

Woah, maybe should have done my research before I signed just like AcidHell2 has, oh well. True, the new facility does seem to be able to accommodate these special needs of the deaf far better than before. Good luck, nevertheless.

no.. the building at the moment is finee.. Deaf children in main stream schooling doesnt work out.. And anyways, do you really think a new secondary school in london would be beneficial.. with the state of the education system now

but yea, if they want a new building, they are expected to raise £5 million.. impossible

I would do it, but it would look strange me inputting a Nottingham address for a petition for a deaf school in the borough of Camden. I don't think these petitions hold much weight, unfortunately.

Yeah of course, as far as I can tell all the petition is asking for is for their specialist needs to be taken into account by having a purpose built school to move into before they are closed, not being temporarily moved like you say.

Seems like a waste of money to me, but that's IMO. So they want a new school whilst the new one is being built.

Where you live doesn't change how you feel about something tho surely?

So what exactly is this petition for, for them to remain the Regional Centre of Excellence in London or just for consideration in being given a new building before they are closed?

Thats not always the case, there are deaf kids in the school I work in, and they get on fine.

yes, but there learning would not be as beneficial.. and its not just that, there are little toddlers who my mum works with, and they wouldnt cope in mainstream schooling

I'd be wary as this government has a thing about integrating special needs pupils into regular schools which i totally don't agree with, especially since they're often given insufficient care and schools are told to take them without being offered the finances to teach them properly.

I used to help out at a special needs school and it was amazing what they achieved, those kids left with more self worth and a better education than they could ever get at a regular school.

Support this 100%, i've got so much admiration for the work that people do at specialist schools like this and it's worth fighting for to make sure it's properly relocated.

Hmmm true, I suppose. I guessed they'd be more interested in those it's going to affect rather than some randomer from a different area (and therefore Councils budget) whose input bears no relevance on their Councils budget. Was just a random thought process of mine ;)

Ok the younger kids maybe, but I was just objecting to the generalisation.

The child I look after is severely disabled (physically) but he goes to one of the best performing mainstream schools in the city. All I meant is their disability doesnt always mean they have to go to special school.

LOok, to be honest im not sure on the facts.. All i know is that for a new school to be built for them, they have to raise the funds for it.

So what's the petition for? I don't want to sign the petition if it means the planned development won't go ahead - it sounds great.

As I've understood it the petition is a for a guarantee that the school will be rebuilt in order for the children to return there rather than stay in the mainstream as in...

"We ask the Prime Minister for a guarantee that Frank Barnes School will be rebuilt and allowed to continue to provide the high standard of bilingual education for Deaf children now and in the future"

I think its good that a new school would be built.. But at the cost of knocking down another school, without giving them an alternative

It is very good work they do. However by the sounds of it and I've only done a quick google so may be totally wrong. They want a new building at a cost of 5million, for a few years while the site is redeveloped. which will then house ta secondary school and a specialist deaf centre as well.

Complete tosh.
My wife works with speech & language kids aged 5 to 7 in a mainstream school and its because of that fact that the kids progress so much.

The problem i have is that it's totally dependent upon each school, not every single school can get good quality special needs teachers, yet every school is being pressured into taking these kids.

Whilst i'm sure a lot of them get a good education in mainstream schools, i feel that a specialist school is the better way to go.

However i'll freely admit that it may not be the case for speech and language kids, i've only had experience with those with learning difficulties such as autism which is a totally different ball game.
