Xbox360 to have integrated HD-DVD?

What's everyones thoughts on this?
I can't see how it makes sense to do this now after they've just done a hardware refresh (the Elite). If they were going to add HD-DVD it would have been in the Elite. Also they couldn't really start putting games on HD-DVD because the 10 million or so current users wouldn't be able to play them. It would just further fracture the 360 user base and any game that was on HD-DVD would get bugger all sales.

Ain't gonna happen. And if it does then Microsoft have finally lost the plot completely.

Good idea to have left it out in a way

One because not everyone would be using it in this generation, and two because it keeps the price nicer :)

The only reason i can see for Microsoft to launch an inbuilt HD-DVD player is to confuse the whole issue over which HD format will win. I don't personally think Microsoft cares either format wins but the longer it can cloud the issue the more likely both will fail and everyone will adopt a download only service using Microsoft software.

With regards to improvements to the Xbox they need to focus on reducing the amount of noise it makes and improve it reliability before they get carried away sticking more toys into it.

5 variants on the one console in 2 years.

I don’t see this happening, right now the elite costs the same as the ps3 putting an hd-dvd and wireless would increase the cost

The only way i can see this happening if this new model replaces the elite.

thankgod for the wii, one console that does what you want it to and thats play games, all these different SKU's is a waste of time, just seems like MS is playing catchup on a rival console that has everything built in so it doesn't start to fall behind in what it offers simply due to them rushing it out in the 1st place

MS aren't playing 'catch up', it's offering an alternative for someone who wants HD-DVD. A lot of people aren't bothered by HD-DVD or Blu-Ray which can be seen from DVD sales, however they are putting the option out for someone who wants it. You don't have to pay the extra, which is something you do/did have to do with the PS3, hence the price at launch.

I really don't see what the problem is with buying the drive separately if you want to watch HD-DVD's? I suppose I can understand why they might want to make it inbuilt but its a tad unfair on the people who bought the drive separately! Also how would a super slow HD-DVD drive work with a super fast DVD9 drive in the same unit?

its playing catch up with the included HD-DVD player (if they go that route) which the PS3 has set as a standard with its included Blu-Ray which is now the same prices as an Elite, yes it has other options for those that don't want it such as arcade, ect, ect, but as a whole package type thing its top level entry price wise on an Elite compared to what the PS3 is doing is at present with built in Wifi & Blue-ray doesn't look as attractive value wise which i presume MS want to address, hence why i said catch up

More 'news' on a 360 Ultimate (Just more of the above really)

If this bit is true, sounds good :) What the Elite should have been imo:

In what would represent a pretty substantial leap from the current top of the range Xbox 360 Elite model, the Ultimate is said to include an HD-DVD drive, 320GB hard drive, built-in wi-fi, proper hi-def audio output, a ‘near-silent’ fan and the latest 65nm hardware architecture that is slowly creeping into existing models. In addition it will include the standard 1080p support and HDMI socket.

I wonder how the 360 fans will reply to that seeing how they slated the PS3 for having all the "unneeded crap" built-in :p

Any ideas about the price?

Got to agree with you there, the PS3 is really growing on me all the time now, the multimedia side of things is fantastic and the games are coming. Haven't turned the 360 on for weeks :)

If the next update allows you to cut/copy/delete files and create your own folders it will be fantastic. Also some form of album cover art like MCE has for music.

If that Ultimate spec is anywhere near accurate I'll upgrade I think, as long as the price isn't 'too' out there. I got my Premium on day one and skipped the Elite upgrade, but this would be worthwhile.

We will still have choice and I can still pay £140 for a 360 without all the stupid crap some daft people want included.

haha, PS3 "Killer"

The current 360 is already a PS3 killer.

Read the last comment on that page dude - this has arisen from nowhere.

Ofcourse it would be cool if they did release it but at the moment theres absolutely nothing... Also I read on Engadget a couple of weeks ago that Microsoft said they wernt going to integrate HD-DVD into the 360 Im sure... And Toshiba confirmed they were making no such device!
