Lesser known films that are worth seeing...

I found Nightwatch quite disappointing, not seen Daywatch yet, but I hear the third part of the trilogy is being made by Fox, who have bought the rights to all 3 films.

I found it quite watchable but it did lack any depth. Like it was made in hollywood really. It was different though and fairly well acted :)

Red Rock West - Has since been ripped off by half a dozen newer movies
Invasion of the Saucer Men - Black and white B-Movie brilliance
Castle in the Sky - Still my favourite Studio Ghibli film

Purely Belter is a great little British film that I won on DVD in a raffle. Decided to give it a go and found it to be really funny, touching and well made. It also has Shed Seven on the soundtrack, which is a bonus! There's a really great bit where Tim Healy (Auf Wiedersehen Pet) is singing You Are Always On My Mind on the karaoke machine at the pub, and his character completely fails to spot the irony of the lyrics he's singing. Superb film.

Little Otik - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0228687/ (The most bizarre film I've ever seen in my life)

Hilarious film - and indeed bizarre.

As for City of God... it's good but it's not that good. I'd say it was a decent film but nothing brilliant.

As for other films I can think of, I'd go for:

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders
Secuestro Express
Uzumaki
Them [Ils]
I Stand Alone
Three Extremes

That's all I can think of at the moment. I won't post the imdb links since no-one'll bother going to them.

Not sure how lesser known it is, but I don't think it's particularly mainstream - I really enjoyed What's Eating Gilbert Grape - how LDC didn't win an Oscar I don't know (think he was only nominated).

I don't think any film with Johnny Depp could be thought of as 'lesser known'. Going by the films the OP posted, he's looking for obscure world cinema.

EDIT - just noticed he cited The Untold Story - excellent film and the best out of those I've seen from Billy Tang.
