Hi,

How much would i be looking at for a new clutch in a Focus 1.6 x reg?. I'm not going to get it done till the summer as I'm fed up with driving at the moment so just want a rough idea of cost really. Ive had a look on line and it seems you can buy a clutch for around £60, would it be better to buy a new clutch then ring round to get the best price on just fitting it?.

I bought a Focus as i thought they were reliable and the clutch has had it after Ive only done 200 miles :(. Plus i have another problem with it idling strangely.

TIA

how many miles the car done.... im guessing well over 60k?

my clutch "went" on my 03 fiesta after only 45k. (30k of this wasnt me so i have no idea how it was driven).

New clutch cost around £90, and fords want about £300 to fit it... I got it done by a mate £270 for whole clutch (all 3 parts + slave cylinder) and new Front pads. So yeah, ring around for it.

Idling strangely can be caused by ECU issues, or dirty injectors. Use some fuel cleaner stuff and go rag it up a motorway or something...

make sure its a clutch kit and not just a single plate, your focus will have a internal concentric slave which should be replaced at the same time and may ++possibly++ require a modified feed pipe.

from our suppliers +roughly+

clutch kit £90
concentric slave £100
feed pipe* £50
gear oil £10
labour (book time) 3.2h x £45 (our rate)**
+vat

£462.95

*may not be required
**many clutch centres have a fixed labour charge that may well be less, they rely on bulk clutches as a generic indy we don't.

Whack it in 5th, bring up clutch. If it doesn't stall then the clutch is shot. Definately worth doing the slave cylinder at the same time as the clutch too. I had to do the master cylinder on my focus, that wasn't too cheap- about £140 all in :(

Tried disconnecting the battery for a bit in case the ECU has gone a bit funny? Tried cleaning the idle control valve?

What are the symptoms?

Clutches wear just like brakes and tyres. Clutches also tend to "go" when the car is subjected to a suddenly different driving style. For example, I could buy [TW]Fox's 530 and the clutch could be done for after a couple of weeks.

Interesting, never had the issue myself.

That could be why :D, Ive only done 200 miles since passing my test and only used a diesel before that so it was hard to get used to a petrol car. But i never hold the car on the clutch at lights or anything like that and I'm never harsh with it.

I got my dad to drive the car before i bought it to see if the clutch was OK and he said the car drove great and the clutch was fine. So your theory could be the reason its gone then.

The symptoms started on boxing day when i was giving my Gran a lift. I set off and had to give it far more revs than usual as it didn't seem to move. At first i thought i was wheel spinning or something but there was no noise. Then i smelt a really strong burning smell in the cabin. Its not quite as bad at the moment but still doesn't seem right. I'm going to let my dad take it for a drive and see what he thinks it is. I'm not sure if the biting point has gone higher as its quite high in the Focus anyway.

Thanks I'll try this, although it really needs to be fault checked tbh. I made a thread on it a while ago and there were quite a few good suggestion's of what it could be. My local garage then suggested it was something totally different, they said it could be sucking air in.

Whack it in 5th, bring up clutch. If it doesn't stall then the clutch is shot.

Is this from a standstill or while driving at 30mph?. Thanks for the tip I'll give it a try.

Thats not as bad as i was thinking it would be, my dad said it'll be around £700 , then my sisters boyfriend said it'll be around £140. Would it be worth me finding the cheapest parts on line then just getting them fitted?.

You say it was burning, did it smell eggy? are you sure you weren't sitting on the cluth?

Also get a decent clutch put in, you don't want to source cheap clutch and then find out it's burnt out after a few weeks.

We were on a flat road, i set the revs and found the bite and as i lifted the clutch slightly to set off nice and slow with Gran in the car :D it didn't move. I applied more revs and lifted the clutch a bit more and it started moving so i lifted the clutch right up as we started rolling and it didn't set off as usual. I had to apply more revs to get moving then smelt a burning smell. It wasn't eggy, it was like burning plastic or something.

My dad said it could be the handbrake locked on when i got to his house but the rear drums were just warmish and would have been red hot. It definitely wasn't wheel spinning. Ive only drove it once since then which was today and it didn't seem as bad but still not the same as it was before.

I'll put it in 5th tomorrow and see what happens, if its not the clutch i think I'll just take it to a mechanics to be fault tested. Theres just loads of other things id rather spend my money on at the moment and really didn't want to be spending £500 on my car so soon.

Since you say you've only done 200 miles since passing there is that possibility you're sitting on the clutch mate.

That's cars for you, soon after I bought mine it needed a new set of tyres all round and new pads as one was sticking, nice bill of around 250 IIRC :o

Sounds like you ride the clutch. You ideally should have it in the "intermediate" position (not fully in or out) for as short as possible, while still retaining a smooth start. Going too long will wear it out.

This is what I was led to believe by my instructor, and it makes sense to me, since riding the clutch (letting revs be higher than they should be for the speed and gear, by having the clutch in a bit so it isn't fully engaged.)

Has your dad tried it since you have felt a problem to make sure?

I don't usually do that, i usually set off quite fast, bringing the clutch up in a smooth motion while giving it more gas as i do. I was just trying to set off slowly as i had my Gran in the car. On hills when i stop i apply the handbrake then when I'm ready to set off i find the bite and hold the car then move off. But Ive only done 200 miles so far and a lot of them were motorway miles going to the Trafford Center and back.

My dads not tried it yet, I'll probably drop it off tomorrow for him to take a look. Maybe i am doing it wrong, I'm just driving how my instructor showed me tho :(.

You might have been riding it IMHO since you say you tried to set off slowly you could have just been sat on it. Try not to concentrate on lifting the clutch and gears as such just go with the flow naturally and you won't muck up.

Saying all this let your Dad take it out as we could all be wrong and the clutch could infact be shot.

What does "sitting on the clutch" mean, i think I do it but not sure. (sorry to partly hijack the thread)
