http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/03/microsoft-17-7-million-xbox-360s-and-8-1-million-copies-of-halo/

Microsoft sent out a little email of jubilation this evening touting sales figures for the Xbox 360 and a few of its published titles. Microsoft states it has sold 17.7 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide and although the NPD numbers aren't out yet for December, the Xbox 360 sales should be higher than the 770K sold in November. Not including the data from December, Microsoft says it currently has a hardware to software ratio of 6.9; that's a .3 increase since we last checked all the consoles in October.

Speaking of software, "*** Haloz" was sold 8.1 million copies since launching Sept. 25 and it appears the statistic that around 50% of Xbox 360 owners have Halo 3 is not just a US number, but a global figure. In a great sign for fans of dramatic space operas, Mass Effect sold 1.6 million units since introducing us to interstellar pleasure Nov. 20 -- keep those Hanar tentacles crossed for a sequel announcement this year. The full NPD numbers will hit the streets on Jan. 17 to give us the full details of this very merry consumermas.

I'm going to see if there is a press release on MS press site now. But in the mean time. Discuss!

Halo 3 was hugely overrated.

The Halo Universe is an extremely successful franchise, lucrative for both Bungie and Microsoft. The OP indicates this clearly with some impressive figures!

Whether or not Halo 3 was “hugely overrated” is a matter of opinion and not one I share :)

Numbers have gone up a lot. Last time I recall reading 360 was around 11mill, PS3 at about 6mill and Wii stonking ahead on 12 mill.

So until the Wii figures are released I guess 360 reclaims the crown!!

I'm looking around and vgchartz.com says Wii has sold over 19m!

Thats great but the games attach rate has gotta be low. My Wii hasn't been turned on in ages.

The Wii has sold nearly 20 million units going by whats VGchartz says. PS3 still a lowly 8 million...

Josh

EDIT - Beaten!

How many of them though are sat in a game swap shop after being traded in? I bet a fair at the local trade in games shop by me they must have about 35 copies on the selves preowned

These numbers are sold to retail? Pretty good this time last year they announced 10.5 Million sold to retail so 7.2 million this year. According VGchartz (not the most reliable i know) they have about 16 million sold to customers so i dont think 1.7 million consoles either in shops in transit or in a wharehouse worldwide that un realistic. Be intresting to see in the next few weeks what Sony and Nintendo sold to retail figures are, Sony wanted to ship to retail 11million by the end of March 08, again at VGcahrtz PS3 is at 8.92 million so thats not to unrealistic. Nintendo prob didnt think that they would sell close to 20 million Wii's by the end of 07 be intresting how close the numbers will be.

I agree that Halo 3 is over-rated, thats why its no where near as good as Halo 2 and thats what ruined it but man those figures are impressive! Microsoft must be raking it in... Glad they managed to squeeze those free arcade games out of their budget :p

8.1m copies of Halo 3? Jesus christ console gamers have low standards/are suckers for marketing.

LOL! Thats one of the funniest things I have read for a while, thank you.

Crysis *cough* People going ape over this game and how its going to blow everything away. Few weeks later they are all bored of it and the actual game appears to be sucky. Whos the bigger mugs? the £300 console buyers or the £600+ PC buying gamers :P

It really doesn't interest me at all, so it'll be a long time till I play Halo 3. Give me CoD4 any day :D

It is very low, at the conference I went to the developers were talking about 2 consoles (Xbox360 and PS3) and then the Wii which they don't class as a household console because it's primarily been bought by social gamers or people who like the look of Wii Sports.

The problem is, it could be a brilliant console, it's very frustrating. Nintendo need to get a western company to design their next consoles hardware to have a stunning looking console with games like Mario, Metroid and Zelda is a gamers wet-dream.

17.7 million units with 16 million sold to be honest I don't think thats very spectacular, People say the PS3 isn't selling very well but its sold 8 million units in half the time the X360 has sold 16 million so they are neck and neck.
If you look at the sales figures for the past few weeks (Jan sales time) world wide the X360 was actually the worst seller of any of the consoles, last week the (poor selling) PS3 sold 110,000 units more than the X360.
The one console that has done very very well is the Wii, 19 million units in just over a year WOW the only problem is the poor attachment rate of the Wii, I wonder ho many of those 19 million will find there way onto the second hand market as people get fed up with Wii Sports
