why do we blank out the word god?

"Well you've explained to me what it means and I still don't find it offensive. I doubt many people are going to suddenly find it offensive when they know what it means."

that's because most people don't beleive that what it actually means is true.
So? It doesn't really matter why they don't find it offensive.

"There's a lot of things that a lot of people might find offensive but the vast majority don't. What makes blasphemy special?"

well i think that is fairly clear, and you know the nswer yourself.
Well I think the answer is nothing. So if we say blasphemy shouldn't be allowed on TV or on public forums then we'll have a huge list of other things that shouldn't be allowed either.

"It's level of offensiveness is completely a personal thing. It would be stupid to deny that you, and perhaps quite a few religious people, do find it very offensive. But that doesn't change the fact that most people don't find it offensive. There is no absolute measure of how offensive something is, only relative to each individual."

its ofensive because it is ofensive to God, and obviously different people find different things more ofensive than others. that's a bit of a non-point really.
I was just pointing out that I wasn't debating how offensive the word is because there isn't really a sensible answer.

that's also not the point!
What is the point then?

Doesn't evolution prove we descended from monkeys?
You only have 200 year old scripture to back up your belief.

Anyway, that aside, i do admire your sincerity yantorsen and your willingness to suffer us fools trying to bate you into an argument.
I will check out this audio file and let you now what i think.
Enjoy your weekend people.

specifically about what?

and it seems you are unwilling to budge yourself, no?

To the question I asked, and that is exactly what I mean about not getting an answer :p

And no, I'm not willing to budge unless some compelling evidence is given. More than a translation of a translation anyway.

imh(yeah right!)o, not blaspheming in front of people who will find it offensive is just common courtesy. If it's part of your daily vocabulary then that's not a problem, but that's no reason to inflict it on people who will find it offensive. Much the same as you don't say **** or **** in front of your gran - not because it's not part of every day vocab, just because it's not really on doing stuff like that.

(email's in trust if you want to know what the starred words are. Use your imagination)

You must be a very nice person then. I find ginger people incredibly offensive to my eyes. Do they apologise to me? Do they hell!!

you are literally too hilarious. you are the point at which hilarity loops back on itself and becomes its own opposite. In short, you are not now, nor will you ever be funny.

a joke about ginger hair, I can't believe you went there. It's not even obvious or anything.

sorry, hotmail won't let me attatch files over 10mb, but if you have a hotmail IM acount, I could send you it over MSN?

any chance you could use www.sendspace.com ? I wouldn't mind having a listen

by asking God to send someone to hell, is cursing someone, no?

those who curse overs will cursed themselves, by God, so clearly God does not aprecieate it. Plus we do not have the right, power, or wisedom to decide on somebodies fate.

Ok I get that. But sometimes you don't know whether the people you are talking to are likely to find it offensive. If you were giving a talk to a group of christians then it would be obvious you shouldn't use blasphemy, but when your audience is more general, how are you supposed to know?

there already is for broadcasting lol.
Yes and that list is based on the how offensive the general population perceive it to be on average. Whether blasphemy is considered too offensive or not is their call I suppose, but from my experience too few people find it offensive to really warrant censoring it.

If I was giving a talk to a general group of people then I would try not to be offensive [edit] if someone was offended, I'd apologise.

this is all assuming that you actually care about offending people - if you don't, just carry on as you were ;)

yeah sure, what is your email so i can send it to you both?

jasper [ A T ] sameagain [ D O T ] net - thanks :)

well it's not essential you say it, so there's no need to say it.

well it's not essential you say it, so there's no need to say it.

Well it depends on your reason for being there. If it's to entertain people then there may well be a reason to say it.

Also how are you supposed to know what other things you shouldn't say in case someone in the audience is offended?

"Well it depends on your reason for being there. If it's to entertain people then there may well be a reason to say it."

comedy can be an exception, as it's not usually meant.

but we are talking about when people use it outside of that context.

"Also how are you supposed to know what other things you shouldn't say in case someone in the audience is offended?"

well you don't, so you just don't say anything that will offend people, it's called thinking before you speak.
