Of couse it's on the bbc; it's an excuse to put MS in bad light.
You'll notice there's no mention of MS's record number of new users or concurrent users.

I am sure there would be if Microsoft actually gave figures of how many new/concurrent members they have (To date I have never seen an actual figure, just vague references).

Also most of these new users are just using 1 month trials etc.

BBC ain't that bad tbh. One of the best news reporting organisations in the world imo. I am sure very few people in the grander scheme of things read their computer games coverage anyway.

haha, shameless mass effect plug :D:p

The plug reminded me that I still have a sealed copy of Mass Effect sitting 6 feet in front of me to play!!!!

I have been thinking and actually I think a free arcade game is not a good deal. Obviously I am grateful to get anything for free, but I think the best deal would be a fixed number of free MS points to spend as you see fit (400 or 800 being most likely). (My decision may be based on me noticing some content that I want on Marketplace that is just an add-on, not a full game).

Dear Xbox LIVE Members:

During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.

At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.

Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!

Sincerely,

Marc Whitten

Wording is ambiguous at this stage as it could be interpreted either way, but after releasing the above statement they would have to give it to both silver and gold members, unless they want more negative press.

I have not bought a new game for a while, but there is a lot to choose from. I think all XBL games have a demo, so it is woth downloading some demos to try out.

I would only recommend games that have any longevity tbh, which rules out a lot of the retro titles. SF2 is good, Lumines is good, Poker is good to kill time, card games seldom get boring, that kind of thing.
