i noticed the last few days my pings are terrible i have just used speed test and im getting 630 but my download rate is still between 17 -20 mb anybody else having these probs with VM

thats takes the p. why are pings so high with VM when i joined 2 months back i was getting like 20-30 now is 600-650?

Because you're with an ISP who cares about nothing else than getting more customers subscribed to their already struggling network. They're trying to recoup financially for their recent losses, and one of the ways they're doing that is by getting more people signed up - but not investing in the infrastructure.

Other recent attempts to recoup funds include:

* Charging people for support on their broadband connection via premium rate number, which normally connects to an Indian call centre.
* Enforcing traffic shaping on their "unlimited broadband service"
* Rounding all calls up to the nearest minute, so 1 minute and 1 second will cost you two minutes worth of calls.

That's just from a quick scan of The Register!

Who's the best ISP, I'm switching..... mustn't have contract tie ins.

EDIT - is there a FREE number I can call to get my transfer number? (forgotten what it is called....)

My ping has been crap since I started with VM adsl in march 07. Cant believe Im still with them. I will just post my speedtest.net and cable modem and tracert to www.google.com so you can have a chuckle. Nothing is downloading and no apps are running in the background that would affect these results. The modem is in the main socket etc etc etc...

I tried to phone them last night to demand my MAC code in fact, but they said I would have to call between 9 and 5, monday to friday to speak to the disconnections department. And for the next 2 hours my pings were suddenly under 50ms for the first time in about 6 months! Usually they sit at around 300ms or so. I have "8mb"... lol

Oh sorry...I thought the OP was on VM Cable.

Oh wait he was.

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit... ;) At least, half of us say so...

I was just trying to point out that VM cable is ok (I had that up until I moved to my current address) but that VM adsl is a totally different (and supremely inferior) animal.
