Warner Bros go Blu-ray exclusive !

I wonder if there is some sort of get out clause in case Bluray became the dominant format? $150m is not a lot compared to the revenue they could lose over the next year or so.

I am sure there is a get out clause of some sort. Come May when Warner stop supporting HD-DVD I think we will see movement from the remaining people who are HD-DVD only.

Anyone will be able to license the Sony/BD technology. But you have to admit it won't "look good" for Microsoft to have to license it. None of the above companies are embroiled in a console (or any other really) war with Sony, so they have no "face" to lose as such.

Fact is, I think MS can easily pay what Sony ask for, Sony are a company in debt and any nice cash payment will be taken with open arms.

Granted they are both in the console market, but sony knows it can still make money form the sale of BR discs from the Xbox family.

So Sony would be foolish to not let MS have the BR licence and the price would be agreed on.
Microsoft
Revenue US $51.12 billion (2007)
Operating income US $18.52 billion (2007)
Net income US $14.06 billion (2007)
Sony Corp.
Revenue $70.303 billion (2007)
Operating income ($608 million (2007)
Net income ($1.071 billion USD (2007)

Look at the difference in money to play with 1 billion vs 14 billion.

I agree, at the end of the day they will just pay what all other companies pay for licensing. But I am sure Microsoft are not overly keen on a headline down the road that says "Microsoft ditches HD-DVD format and adopts rival Sony's tecnology instead"

Why do people seem to have this emotional attachment to either format depending on whichever console they love. I dont care, I will plug on with dvd til the media is cheaper.

I've never cared who 'won'.

i think these movie studios have completely lost it, i mean, within a month of a movie being released at the cinema, it is available on torrents for free. they have no control over this..

MS will never have blu-ray drives in its console

its all about download services

warner's move isnt that big of a deal cos hardly any people are bothering to buy dighdef discs anyway

I see what your saying, but ultimately if we break it down I dont think Microsoft will be worried at all about the acceptance of Blu Ray and damage to their image.

As i see it, Sony are set to gain greatly, but similarly are doing so at the detriment of the Playstation, which is the key BD player atm.

Microsoft will be able to cater for BD and HDDVD, greatly increasing the appeal of the xbox.. of which there are more than twice as many out there. Also, i can see HDDVD becoming the bargain HD format in order to compete with the lack of titles, widening their market again. All of this at the expense of what is a fairly intangible asset, which i cant see actually being damaged anyway. Fanboys may try and attack Microsoft for using Sony technology, but any xbox user knows they simply have more options available to them..

dvd must be 99% of the entire movie market

Which is why I will stick with it. Who do you know outside of these forums that even cares about HD players. Most people have nice flat panel TV's watching SD sources trying to convince themselves they have spent £1000 on a better picture while watching ripped dvd's they bought from some chinese bloke at the market for a £1.

They aren't interested in spending £20 to watch the same film even in HD.

yes but others are already offering dl services such as

netflix
bt vision
virgin media
sky

i don't think high def disk will make any dent in dvd sales next year

and more and more people are dling movies (specifically illegal torrents)

Yeah, I buy blu-ray if there cheap, got deja-vu for 7.99. I have hundreds of DVDs still. Its just another option to have :)

yes, i admit high def is awesome, but its an unrealistic business in the age of divx

movie industry has had its head in the sand for years now

I highly doubt that, you are talking about major corporations. You will more than likely find that they understand the penetration of broadband, the viability of online services and that they simply cant afford to lose physical disc distribution yet.

Toshibas take on the Warner move

TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.

We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.

We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer.

Press Contact Corporate Communications Office Keisuke Ohmori

See they still use the HD players out sold BD players, conveniently not including the PS3, think this may lead them to secure longer contracts for the remaining partners in the HD DVD format.

Yeah it's an option but not one many people outside of a geek forum is interested in. If i even think about where I work there are hundreds of people downloading/swapping and copying crap copies of dvd's. Even watching copies with poor sound and picture quality 5 times worse than a dvd rip.

They want to watch a film thats on at the cinema now.

The dvd market is huge now because finally they are at a decent price a few days after release. There are bargains about.

There are 3 series I would buy on HD, Starwars, LOTR and Alien, the rest I will just keep a dvd format for.

I got caught up in the whole shiney new dvd format and own stacks of films that I've never watched again.

Neither format will ever get anywhere near dvd before it's replaced.
