I'm sorry guys but this made me laugh really good.

Microsoft(a la Jon Lovitz's Liar): We are here to announce our brand new XBOX 360 with built-in HD_D... errrr Blu-ray player... yeah, that's right Blu-ray...

Again I apologize but you have to laugh.

come on Nokkon, surely you ain't that slow to notice Warner Brothers have now gone Blu-Ray meaning HD-DVD format is hardly supported any more (or going to be soonish).

Id be prety happy if they announced an external blu ray player add-on like the HD DVD player. Even better still one of those combi drives that does both.

Didn't they say in the past if the market went one way or the other they'd make the appropriate add-on for the 360?

So if everyone does go Blu-Ray (It's about time we had a clear 'winner') they'll just make a Blu-Ray add on drive?

It doesn't bother me either way though as I'm not interested.

Edit: And this didn't need another thread.

I dont see why you find it funny. I am sure that even with all the rivalry between the two companies that if Microsoft asked for a blu-ray drive to be released for the 360 sony would say yes. They would be stupid to turn down the opportunity, when the 360 has a user base of above 10 million. Obviously all will not buy one but a decent amount would, meaning more money for sony and more wide spread use of blu-ray. Surely thats win win

I beleieve they did, and indeed can.
The joys of not centring the hardware on a specific, comparatively expensive media format that is (or had) an uncertain future at the time the primary hardware is being designed.

MS can release a blu-ray add on for the 360 at any time (assuming they are not locked into a HD only contract*) they see fit, with relative ease as the chances are it would just require a minor update for the 360 (and they could probably using the same housing as they do for the HD-dvd add on with just cosmetic changes). They could even keep backwards compatibility with the existing 360hd dvd add on owners collections by using a combo drive in a revision of the add on.
Basically it probably wouldn't be any harder for them than say changing the internal drive from a Lite-on to an LG (or whatever ones they use).

*Which is unlikely.

I shall explain.

The core of the joke was that there were heavy rumours of a hd-dvd built in Ultimate Xbox360 and this is how the announcement would have gone :)

EDIT: reading it again it was funnier at the time. I shall re-read my future jokes.

Laugh at what?
I don't get it.

I think the joke is Microsoft's indecisiveness, they never really showed any faith in HD-DVD hence the throw-away add-on drive, if it were true of an Ultimate edition (we'll probably never know now) then it was 1-2 years too late.
