*New* 8800GT Stock Cooler Ballistics Report

Well the first thing is that the new cooler is self automating, it speeds up the fan according to load, the second thing is that the fan is a lot quieter than the old version.

I can't comment on the quietness aspect, but my two 'original' (who decided they should be called 'betas' by the way?!) 8800GT's also speed up according to load using just the Nvidia drivers. I've never used Rivatuner.

The new coolers do look like a sensible step forward, as although personally I'm not worried about load temps in the 90's, I know some people do fret!

The O.P I believe :)

I can, the new cards are loads quieter

Really? Mine only sped up a little bit, as you can see if you click the image below the fan has only revved up to 43% percent, even though the cards has reached 95°C

From what I read some peoples had cards that didn't change the fan speed at all?

it never revs itself up past 29%

Yeah, it's all very confusing!

I read about some peoples cards not moving from 29%, but that's not something mine do. I can definately hear them getting faster as the cards heat up, until they are 100% at over 100c. They don't get near that temp whilst gaming though, so that's why I've not done anything about it.

It would seem this first batch of cards were a bit of a mixed bag.

As I said, a sensible move on the card makers parts.

Pleased to hear they are quieter too, mine do hurt the ears above 60%!! Fortunately, that isn't very often.

Your a lucky guy having two cards in SLI, that must be awesome although costly!

I sold the Radeon HD2900XT after owning it for three weeks because the fan irritated me. I read all the 'pre' reviews on the 8800GT and every single one made a point of saying how quiet the single slot cooler was so I had high expectations. Indeed once I got the card I was thrilled when I did some gaming and the card remained quiet, sadly when I opened the case panel after a few hours I could feel the heat coming from the 8800GT and it was scorching hot!!!

So then I had to learn how to use Rivatuner so I was able to track the temps and I was pretty shocked to see the results. I then had to read a few reviews to learn how to program RivaTuner to automate the fan speed (not a simple process at first) and basically I ended up with a card that was almost as loud as the HD2900XT I had just sold!! :o

At max the GT's fan is still no competition to the 2900XT's fan.

It always seems strange that ATI/NVIDIA can design such immensely complicated GPUs, yet get something as simple as a cooling fan wrong.

Pretty much every nVidia card I've owned (only ATI with a fan I've had is a 9800Pro) have been poorly designed in regards to cooling. However, I think they rely too much on the vendors to develop their own cooling solution, but more often than not they don't since it adds R&D costs which the smaller brands just cannot afford/bother with and sell them with their own shiny new sticker on top of the reference card.

I'm happy with my 8800GTS 512 now, fan is running at 36% and is barely audible idling at 58C  nVidia actually made their own decent cooling solution for a change.

I would like to know what actually happened but I gather nVidia *rushed* ahead of schedule to get the cards to market before AMD released the HD3800 series, obviously there was some fine tuning of the single slot cooling solution to be done!

Anyway its working now, straight out the box, no fiddling or configuring, just install and get on with your gaming or whatever. . .

Wayne I got my new Leaktek - it came with the revised cooler which I'm very pleased about. No problems with performance now, no lockups :)

It will matey they are all shipping like that now... mine wasn't pictured or described with having the new fan. I think when they RMA they just looked at the fan and replaced my card with another :)
