BFG 8800 GTX OC problems

Normally at startup the GPU fan revs up loud for a few seconds and then calms down and Windows starts up ok. Now, when you turn on the PC, the GPU fan stays at full speed and no input comes through (tried 3 monitors). I don't think the problem is Vista (for once!) because I can hear the Vista login sound, so Window's is starting, but there is no display on the monitor from the card.

After powering off and turning it back on 15 or 20 times it might work but obviously that's not great. Anyone know of any quick fixes? Cheers.

Also, I ran 3DMark06 and my score has gone from 11,515 to 4,022. I know as a benchmark it's not exactly perfect but still, that can't be right.

Make sure the card is running PCI-E 16x not 1x. GTX's usually do that at startup, as for the problem of no input it's got to be the graphics card. You tried anything other than Vista seeing as it's not exactly the best friend of most of us.

Can I check that without going into the BIOS? I can't see it in Device Manager and Nvidia's control panel appears even more useless than ATI's one, and I used to think it was bad.

I don't want to restart to go into the BIOS because the same thing happens when I restart i.e. the card will not work again for another two hours of turning it on and off repeatedly until it decides to work.

And no, I'm stuck with Vista now.

Oh yeah, I have that, I was actually using it to check memory timings but didn't know it also did PCI-e, I'll check when I get home. Cheers.

Download CPUZ, that will tell you what your PCI-E is running at.

OK CPU-Z says PCI-E Max Supported is x16 but Link Width is only x1. Does this mean it changed by itself from x16 to x1 and how on earth did it do that? Why?

And how do you change it back? I don't see any such options in the BIOS.

RivaTuner says it as well:

PCIE link width : 16x supported, 1x selected

Does anyone know how to change it back to 16x?

So is there literally no way to get a graphics card back to x16? Does anyone know is this definitely the card's fault or could it be a mobo PCI 2.0 issue? I'm open to wild guesses, rumours, hearsay, I'll try anything at this stage to get decent COD4 & TF2 framerates again.

The card was fine (if somewhat tempermental) a few weeks ago, why would it suddenly go mental?

Better go back to ATI, never had a problem with any of their cards, I think Nvidia cards just don't like me :). 3870x2 sounds good.

Wow BFG customer service is really good. Offered to set up a replacement straight away. I was expecting the usual hassle. Go BFG! If only they did ATI cards.
