Interesting article on Empire Magazine today. They are reporting that Warner Bros are going exclusive on Blu-Ray from June onwards. Is this another nail in the coffin of the HD-DVD format. I must admit, it's one of the reasons I have not upgraded my system at home simply because of the two competing formats

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry. Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

Hmm, I think it could be. I remember hearing something similar a few months ago. I'm a bit annoyed that Sony's own format (although again, I believe I read that a lot of people hold a stake in Blu-Ray now?) has won, or will do.

I just wish one would hurry up and win so we can know what to upgrade to.

Sadly, I feel that HD-DVD has been pushed over the edge of existence with this one.

Which, frankly is a shame, as saying "Blu-Ray" makes you loom silly imo, perhaps BR-DVD would work...

BD-ROM is the shortened form I think.

I've always though Blu-Ray would win, to be honest. Not down to personal preference or anything - they just have so many more companies onside.

I think Warner's announcement of Blu Ray exclusivity from May 08 is probably the most telling sign that the HD pendulum in finally swinging towards one of the formats in particular. No doubt MS will continue to throw money at the problem for a while, but it's becoming more and more clear that they're really just delaying the inevitable.

I didn't care who won just as long one format did. This is a great move IMO and is better all round for the industry.

I think Blu-Ray got ahead when Disney signed up to it. At the time I don't think HD-DVD had any major companies signed to it.

I'm annoyed sony appears to be winning since I don't like the way they treated their fans with the ps3, yet the sucess of blueray is bound to make the ps3 another winner.

The porn industry went with HD-DVD,

Most likely because of blu-ray region restrictions, unless the "films" are region free? Also HD-DVD chosen for the more "extreme" titles which are banned in the countries you're in.

More likely because Sony has always refused to reproduce pornography and Sony have got by far the most advanced Blu Ray disc manufacturing facility at the moment.

Same happened with Betamax.

I'm glad that Blu-Ray is winning. Firstly because it's a superior format technologically. Secondly, because it makes a PS3 pretty good value for money, if only on the multimedia side. What Hi-Fi magazine rated it as the best Blu-Ray player for less than £500 irc.

Personally, i'd have liked to see HD-DVD win the format war. I now know that's unlikely to happen without a miracle, or some massive cheques being passed around.

I blame the DVD Forum. They should have made the licenses for DVDs be tied to the next generation of the DVD format. So, if you wanted to release on DVD, you'd have to have signed up to release on the next DVD format, which turned out to be HD-DVD. Then there would be no format war. Just one format for all the studios to get behind, and start rolling out the titles.

It's the only reason for me...well almost, as DVDs are like cheap as chips these days, £3.99 for some that are 6 months after release !

BluRay is HD DVD is it not?? Albeit the name is different....and the technologies behind it! But it is high def content on what is essentially a dvd

The porn industry went with HD-DVD, which was a major coup at the time, but I can't see them sticking with it at this rate.
The porn industry really doesn't dictate what's going to happen this time though, back in the day when people bought vhs tapes there wasn't an internet where everyone was offering content here, there and everywhere while being anonymous by not having to leave the home. While it may have signed up to HD-DVD exclusivity I'd say much less than half of sales come from physical copies, the internet is making porn more available, and that's the way it's turned imo.
