Intel 1gb Turbo Memory - What on Earth?

Work colleague is just speccing together a Laptop from a stone-like company, and under Expansion Slot is listed the above Intel 1gb Turbo Memory... what is this? I thought it might be a USB Memory pen but as an Expansion Slot?
 
Vista use's USB sticks to speed up the system. Do a search on readyboost. Some laptops have the USB stick built into the laptop as you cannot really go around with a USB stick in the back all the time.

this is going to become more and more common

they have 1gb of flash memory integrated onto the mainboard

it functions exactly the same as a 1gb readyboost compatible memory stick being inserted

but integrated, so you dont have to worry about it sticking out, falling off etc.. :)

It's probably cheaper to add ready boost and probably gives a better performance as its flash memory.
 
yeah maybe the flash drives draw less power that several sticks of RAM? That would lend itself to the 'conserve battery power' ethos that laptops revolve around mostly. . .
 
Oh, i guess that makes sense.. but seems a little pointless. why not just make all RAM flash memory? :/

It costs to much but that's the way things are going. Current Hard drives are slowly being replaced with flash drive tech. Give it a few more years and today's hard drives will start to get rare in new PC's. Just look at how fast and far current flash drive hard drives have advanced.

Normal ram is better and it costs more. You can never have to much ram and its better to have readyboost with normal ram then it is to only have normal ram.

vista readyboost is only beneficial for machines running vista with less than 1GB of ram. at 1GB, the difference is minimal, and nonexistant with more than a gig.

i've for 4096GB of PC2-6400. how much benefit would i see if i plugged a 4GB flashdrive (one of those fast corsair ones) with readyboost? probably zilch.

(i can't test, i don't have Vista anymore)

Spot on. It's meant as a way for Vista to run ok on older machines.
