The first meal of the day is always breakfast no matter what time it is

Here's how I understand it:

Breakfast - first meal of the day, usually eaten in the morning. <10:30
Lunch - eaten around midday give or take.
Tea/Dinner - The evening meal. In the UK, this is traditionally the largest meal.
Supper - Can be a snack or a meal, or whatever, any time after tea.

Ok, here one for you.

What where the ladies called at school that served your meals at midday....thats right...dinner ladies. Not lunch ladies!

Breakfast, Dinner, Tea, Supper. Thats just how it is!!

Breakfast

Breaking fast

meaning the first meal you have after waking up. be it 2 hours of 12 :)

I think you'll find that dinnerladies also serve dinner [i.e. the last meal of the day] and it became the generic term.

As I said previously it depends what the main meal of the day is on that specific day :)

I know, but the midday meal we have for Christmas is Christmas lunch, not Christmas dinner. And that's certainly the main meal of the day!

I don't think Brunch really exists, and if it did, it would be elevenses.

Dinner can be at lunchtime or evening. But on Sundays, we call it a roast :)

I am not fat and I am not lazy, I have been working long hours all weekend and finally got my lie-in so now I am going to go downstairs and make breakfast. It will consist of toast or cereal and it will be the first thing I eat today and therefore it is breakfast.

Here's a wrinkle. Why when I got married did I have my wedding breakfast at three in the afternoon? It wasn't even as nice as my proper breakfast, which was a fry up in a cafe. Mmm.
