Don't say eBay! :D

I want to sell my GT Avalanche 1.0 complete with the modifications I have done to it so that I can get a good road bike. I have to cycle further to work and rely on my bike more and more for transport around town.

So what is the best way of getting a good price for this bike? I should imagine that trying to sell it in the local advert mags would mean it would be pitched against a load of Halfords tat.

I will get another mountain bike in the future but at the moment I cannot afford to buy a new road bike straight off.

As usual I need the expert advice of the OCUK Forums.

Pinkbike.com has a UK section that might be of use, as far as I'm aware it is at least free to advertise but other than that MBUK or MBR are good options. Also have a look in your local bike shop as many will allow you to put up adverts.

Not sure if it would sell to well on pinkbike, it tends to have higher end bikes.

I wouldnt call a GT avalance a particulary expensive bike.

Best bet would be a local bike club, or ebay.

Sure over £500 + £100 for upgrades isn't an expensive bike! :p

I know it is not uber expensive, but it isn't you average Halfords £70 quid "full suspension" job.

In Mountain bike world the GT Avalanche 1.0 is a low-medium level bike, 2nd hand its worth even less (think 50%), I'd try to sell it locally in your local paper (save postage) and bike forums and bike magazines.

Actually, I can't seem to get my email to display in my trust at the moment. If you can give me yours that would be great. Can I just ask what years model it is please?

MTB forums.... Saves the ebay fees.

I'd think 200-250 for an Avalanche.

I sold my Pace for a grand on ebay. No concerns.

Some bike shops will put it on display for you and take a slice of the selling price of you, but at least it gets looked at by people as they go in to buy bits..

Might work, my brother sold his road racing bike this way.

Half price? Forget that.

Despite what people say here £500 for a bike is expensive. Sure you can buy bikes worth over £2000 but to me (and most people) £500 is a lot.

Guess my Road Bike will be "entry level" as well then. :( :p

Is the 2006 one the one that is Red and White?

Also, how much are you looking for it then?

I've ordered a GT Avalanche 1.0 2007 model, it is however the non disc version but it's costing me only £300.

Yeah the 2006 has a white frame with red text. The 2007 has a worse spec than the 2006 version.

It isn't just people here, it is simply that people who are seriously into bikes will probably drop a couple of grand on a bike and think it entirely normal because it is a major hobby. If I hadn't become a student and more or less shelved my interest then I'd likely be one of them.

It is a question of scale, if you are only going to pootle to the shops then spending more than £200 is a waste of money really because you are unlikely to utilise the better componentry to its full potential. If you are going to be doing 6' drop offs then the same bike will disintegrate within a couple of runs if you are lucky so it becomes immediately obvious why you need to spend the extra if that is the level you are at.
