Greatest military unit ever

lots of good shouts here but as a bit of a military buff i'd have to say,and it pains me to do so,the current US army.they have so many seriously cool and lethal toys that no other nation could stand up to them.

"Group" had major success during the conflict in Northern Ireland, these guys and a couple of women were infiltrating the PIRA and Loyalist paramilitaries in order to recruit informants or "touts" as the paramilitaries lied to call them.

Personally, I'd have to say either the Roman Empire for conquering so much and holding it all together for so long despite racial differences between the many peoples of the Empire, or the Greeks under Alexander the Great; pushed all the way into India those blokes, the only reason they stopped was because they ran out of lands to conquer. Unit-wise, it'd have to be the Phalanx. Invincible from the front, and devastating if deployed correctly. Extremely vunerable on the flanks however, and highly vunerable to charges from the more mobile cavalry units.

sparta for the completey militaristic way of life
roman army for being so far ahead of their time it ws unreal (from tech to tactics)
alexander the great for again being ahead of his time in terms of tactics

Mongol Empire, attacking and conquering so many BIG empires within very short period of time and establishing the Yuan Dynasty (China), Mughal Empire (India), Timurid Dynasty (Middle East), Golden Horde (East Europe),

i know its not as modern as most ppls entries but how bout the first emperor qin shi huang. who was the first to introduce standised weapons that were designed to a specific model that aloud quick and easy repairs and production on a level not seen before. he also unitised china and built the great wall of china.

The greatest fighting unit? Why, that'll be Mr Shapre and his band of about six of the 95th Rifles, obviously.

Actually one of the greatest military minds imho has to be Gauis Marius, third founder of Rome. He revolutionised the Roman Army and gave it the organisation and many of the tactics it needed to become the foremost military power in the world (at the time, naturally).

Great thread and almost impossible to answer from my point of view. There were so many revolutionary and remarkably effective fighting units throughout history that to pick one above the others would, in my opinion, somewhat devalue the efforts of the others.

From my point of view, the Greeks under Alexander, the Romans after the Marius Reforms, the Mongol Horde (they deserve special mention for the sheer size of the Mongol Empire in its heyday), the Zulu impis, the Blitzkrieg at the start of WWII and so many others I could sit here all day......keep this thread going, I'm really enjoying it :D

Difficult choice.

I'd say the RAF during the "Battle of Britain" was up there with the best.

And also, don't know if anyone has mentioned them yet, but the "Det".

Was thinking about this when browsing Wiki - who has been the greatest military unit of all time, in terms of influence, victories, world impact etc. When I say unit it could be an entire empire army right down to an individual unit or squad. Including quasi political units in this as well (i.e. Mossad).

Purely in terms of influence, and world impact you would have to include Al Qaeda in the mix. The effect they have had on the modern world is incredible (in a bad way).
