Pandora to be switched off for UK listeners

never used Pandora but I must say that there has to be some secret logic behind the way record companies and those that represent them are behaving. They're constantly doing things like this and all it does is end up with them shooting themselves in the foot.

The bottom line is that anything like this, be it Pandora or P2P is actually healthy for the music (and, indeed, entertainment) industry if you look at it from a logical standpoint. 9 times out of 10 (obviously an estimate based on personal experience, ymmv) these services are used to trial new music before it's purchased. There's no way that I'd have the diverse collection of music I have now if it weren't for P2P and last.fm (wonder how they're managing to get around the legislation that's closing Pandora for everyone else).

I suppose they're right, they are technically 'losing' money through things like this, but it's not money they'd actually have in their pockets if the services went away. People aren't going to go "oh well, we can't use Pandora anymore, I guess I'd better buy the whole album and not be able to return it if it sucks every time I want to check out a new artist".

not without breaking the rules of the forum :)

Living in Switzerland I've been without Pandora for a while, as have my friends. Definitely been a reduction in CDs purchased since Pandora went off-line.

There is last-fm and Deezer, but they just aren't as good.

Dont actually know what a proxy is but I'm assuming in that case its not legal?!

proxies are perfectly legal in most cases (it's what you're doing with them, rather than what they are!)

all it allows you to do is spoof where you're from in order to gain access to something (in this case, at least). because the site is no longer legal in the UK, talking about/getting advice on how to bypass the law is illegal on the forums.

sometimes I think I spend too much time on here

Just read about this, I'm quite sad and a little miffed about the hours I spent fine-tuning my stations! :(

I'm astounded by the blindness the music industry is exhibiting - maybe I'm a bit more combative than average, but the way they're behaving is extremely alienating and makes me never want to buy a CD again! Come to think of it, nearly everything I bought in the last 10 years was from small independent labels or online-only distribution rather than from any of the big record companies, so there.

Got the email from Tim today :(

Very sad as Pandora found me some great music both new & old that I would never of known about otherwise & I have bought several CD's because of Pandora.

The music industry is a total pain in the @rse.

The record companies are only interested in the latest big thing thats plastered all over the place already though and not the more obscure acts.

Oh well looks like its that last day of pandora im still listening to it now, i wonder if they will allow a paid service, i wouldnt mind paying for it if it was a few pounds a month.

ill be sad to see it go :(

I am gutted about this i must spend about 4/5 hours of my working day with it open. I have premtively moved to last.fm that has some nice features but it's not a patch on Pandora

It's the 15th... mine's still working. Or will it be switched off tonight?

Well I'm guessing they're probably based in California, and its currently only 9am over there (5pm here) perhaps it will be midnight in california? as in 8am here on the 16th?

I didn't realise subscriptions were required?

This is on the homepage:

Pandora is currently for U.S. listening only

Might have been there before but I never noticed it.
