Good idea methinks. And about time, as the minister suggests, the law does need to catch up to the times and be more modern.

I think the BPI have gone on record saying they wouldn't bother prosecuting people who make a copy of a CD for their iPod etc saying they were only interested in going after people who share songs or try to make money from music that isn't theirs.
 
That would be great. It's long overdue and I hope it comes in. Then we can talk about dvd ripping.

It actually sounds like this is likely to go through
UK music industry body the BPI said it supported the move to clarify the law for consumers, but warned that any changes should not damage the rights of record companies.

The Association of Independent Music (Aim) said the proposals did not go far enough - pointing out that CDs could become obsolete in the next decade.

It said that, once CDs are replaced, the law could be misused to "open the floodgates to unstoppable copying", adding that it would like to see copyright holders compensated when music was copied.

Lord Triesman said the proposed changes would explore "where the boundaries lie between strong protection for right holders and appropriate levels of access for users".

More or less, they offered a derogation where they stated words to that effect although in theory at least they could have withdrawn it at any point, unlikely but possible.

It is good that this proposal could remove the possibility and acknowledge the situation as it currently stands but careful thought needs to be given to future directions. I'm not so convinced however by the idea that parodies might/should be exempt, provided they meet the current threshold of original expression of an artistic idea (slightly paraphrased) then they should still attract protection - if they don't then that might mean works such as Airplane or This Is Spinal Tap would be left uncovered and that just doesn't seem right.

OMG i never knew that buying CD and ripping them to mp3 so you could listen to the songs on your ipod is illegal,

omg is this world crazy?

btw i do whatever i want with my CDs and DVDs and i aint paying twice for same thing,

They do however have a fair use doctrine which is in some ways better than what we have in the UK although admittedly the DMCA is rather more draconian than what we have.

I've just had a quick look and haven't found anything but if the question is still there when I get home from work I'll look out the text since I have it stored. :)

Tbh I should have bookmarked it last time I found it. What an utter noob I am. :rolleyes::D

I did only search for 'BPI' and 'prosecute'. Perhaps expanding BPI to its full name would have been better.

This is well overdue. I've got hundreds of CDs ripped to FLAC, and some to MP3 that I've never had any intention of sharing and/or pirating to make money. I do it because I'd much rather use the computer (plugged into my amplifier/speakers) then the CD and risk it getting scratched.
