For or against corporal punishment in schools ?

For it I nfact I'm up for a complete reform of the education system all together my mum used to teach primary and even after she'd finished for the day she still had so much damn paperwork like lesson plans and marking to do when she got home and was up until around 12-1 o'clock at night it's ridiculous

and how do you propose we get the discipline right from the start?

the parents sure arent giving it, the teachers dont have the power to do it, what else is left?

most of the bad kids "choose" when to go to school now anyway, so its already an issue
 
It's needed, there is a hard core of particular students in the education system who have no respect for authority.

This causes two big problems, firstly these students take up a disproportiate amount of the teachers time and secondly it puts teachers in a situation that they can't trust the students.

The only other way is to make it much easier to remove troublesome students from the classroom. Although this would lessen the impact these students have on the rest of the school it would do nothing for the trouble makers who would mostly languish in special schools and then most lickely become unemployed or crimininals.

tbh I'd support corporal punishment for crimes.

I mean now its something like a caution for your first 2 ABH charges, then on the third strike you get something pathetic like a fine or an asbo.

So you would rather the goverment didnt interfere in anyones lives and just let people get on regardless? You wouldnt last very long.

I don't have the all answers! however I have run parenting classes helping parents to see how to be more involved with their children and alternative ways of disciplining children. I think that there should be more of these available our classes frequently had waiting lists.

Maybe when they first reintroduce it. But what's the alternative, all schools can really do is give detentions (and schools have a hard time enforcing afterschool detention if the parents are uncooperative) or exclude the student (which many students want because it gets them time off school).

Most students are well adjusted because their parents do get disipline right. But it only takes a very small minority who have no fear of authority to ruin it for everyone. The scary thing is it spreads, some well brought up children see what they can get away with and quickly become badly behaved.

Didn't seem to work in the olden days.

London was still a crime-ridden city... and illiteracy among the adult population was rampant.
But hey, they used the cane in school so society was A-OK. ;)

Yes,it worked for me and my mates 20-25 years ago so why shouldnt it work now?

We knew if we misbehaved at school we would get the cane,yes we misbehaved now and then and sometimes we did get the cane and we dreaded it and did put fear into us.

What do kids have to fear in school today? Nothing...they can basically do as they please and treat teachers how they want.
 
i'm with mrbios on this one the most troublesome kids have no respect for authority what so ever . in my area if a policeman asks a group of kids to stop doing summin the likely hood is the policeman is going to get attacked . softly softly isnt teaching kids anything except that they can do what they want.

Unfortunately in the real world most kids are too far gone or have parents who really don't care. If some kids (who quite frankly deserve it) get slapped so that the other 30 kids can learn and get on with the lesson what’s the problem? We live in a violent world and saying "no hitting" is going to do absolutely nothing.

By all means teach the future generations how to properly bring up a child, but right here right now something needs to be done with the "happy slapping" generation, and bubble rapping doesn’t work.

the reason parents dont discipline (sp?) their kids these days is because they were not disciplined themselves at school.
imo a little chav abusing teachers/other pupils needs the living **** kicked out of him, and then he wont mis-behave last time. The same goes for the law, slam a car door on a car theif's fingers, and he wont be doing it again.
I think chavs/yobs from schools should be forced into a year of national service in the army, as this would sort them out.
The UK has a very pathetic approach on everything now and it needs a massive turnaround as it has gotten rediculus.

tbh i don't care if it stops them from crime,.

I just found it bloody annoying when whole lessons where wasted doing sod all while a teacher spent 60% of the time yelling at one or two people and the other 40% was them doing things before getting yelled at.

I learn a hell of a lot more once we entered set's sorted by ability where there people who actually wanted to work.

It's not the schools job to stop crime but to teach and to make sure those that want to learn can.
