I thought seen has I'm going to buy a couple of upgrades I may has well also buy a copy of Vista Home Premium. I was a little worried I may have issues with it because people say there's driver problems it crashes a lot and its extremely sluggish.

I found it easy to install. I only had one driver issuie which was my fault for buying a poo no brand Wifi Dongle. Vista seems to boot has fast has XP and shut down faster when theres no updates being installed. No sluggishness and No BSOD. So far.

The only down side is it seems to eat over 1GB of my DDR2 before I even do anything but I put installed 4GB anyway so no biggie.

People seem to hate Vista and so far I can't see why.

Thats not a problem, its meant to do that its called SuperFetch.

If he's a wise interwebs user then he won't need real time scanning full stop. I've not used a virus scanner ever and I've been fine through the years. Just adopt a decent approach to how you use the web and you'll be fine. No cpu hogging real time lark needed.

It's cool to hate Vista, just like it's cool to hate MS despite all they've done in the world. I remember when Vista first came out and I couldn't get my Nebula DigiTV box working with it (still can't, no drivers) so I went back to XP to use it on that. I lasted just two days on XP before returning to vista - just because it was a hell of a lot smoother, more feature packed and I was happy knowing that the thing was more up to date.

This a common occurance for new Vista users. There is just so much misinformation out there that people just assume it is a load of crap and that is "Windows ME Mk 2"! Well that couldn't be further from the truth. Yes it is not perfect but then neither was XP or even 2000. It is however the most "perfected" operating system from Microsoft to date. It is a fantastic workstation and gaming OS and to be honest there is nothing else that compares to it.

My only gripe with it is that the Control Panel is a complete and utter mess! Why did they do that to it?! :( Doesn't bother me though as, come on, how often is it that you need to navigate around the Control Panel in a hurry?

The fact remains he is not you & i would not like his experience of vista to be hampered by the slight chance that he picks up something so early on just for the 0001% something that i have not noticed performance gain.

I have disabled:

1. SuperFetch (to stop the disk thrashing which drove me up the wall)
2. Windows Search/Indexer
3. Windows Defender
4. Windows Firewall
5. System Restore

Kaspersky, Outpost Pro 2008 and SuperAdBlocker run very well with Vista Ultimate 64.

i've never notice real time scanners doing anything adverse to my pc, unless it decides to do a system scan when im playing a game or something lol. actually today avg decided to a full system scan while i was playing cod4. i didnt even notice until right at the end when it started chugging. i ALT+TABBED out to see the 'scan complete' window.

love it.

I couldn't have put it better myself. I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate for almost a year now and I love it. Since the recent updates/patches ect, it's an excellent O/S to the point where I don't like using Windows XP anymore as it feels likes Windows 98 again. :)

Click on the classic view. Ahhh back to good old win 98 layout.

superfetch and what does it actually do?

It stores you most common apps in ram. So when you click the launch button. They will open almost instantly. Takes a while to learn what you actually use. But if you open up a game the ram is instantly made available for it. It doesn't even have to write anything to the HDD it just overwrites on the memory. SO there's no delay. I don't see the point in disabling it.

Oh yes you will if you have a Raptor 150 or using laptop. It will eat away your battery and reduce your HDD life expectancy down to 3 days.

To disable it, click start and type services.msc and look for superfetch.
