You could just pick up a cheap O2 PAYG from CPW and use the SIM Card in that. Say a Nokia 6300 for £60 which to be fair is cheaper than insurance over 12 months assuming that you didn't have a really expensive phone.

My phone got very wet a few months ago on Orange with no contract.
Rang them up and they refused a replacement, so we said we'd cancel the offer and move on, and then a superior worker there spoke to us and sent out a brand new replacement the next day.
