Hello,

I am looking for a 2nd Lens for my Nikon D50, required for Low Light, handheld & fast focusing, currently have the 18-200VR. I would have liked the Nikon 17-55 F2.8 but its too expensive :( , Any ideas if the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro is a good choice ?

Thx

would a prime lens be ok? you could go faster than 2.8 if it would be ok.

Hi,

I looked at the Nikon 50mm, but don't want to be limited by the focal length. Ideally a 18-50 or 18-35 would be fine

Any suggestions ?

The Sigma 18-50, Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 17-50 will probably be your shortlist for budget, constant f/2.8 zooms. I'd go for the Tamron; it's not incredible but it's very very good for the price (~£260).

If you're shooting in actual low-light you'll want a prime, though.

Are there any primes at that end of the price range ?

Seriously get the 50mm f/1.8 and don't even worry about the focal length 'limitations' unless you really really want a wide (18mm) at f/2.8. The 18-200 is f/3.5 at the wide end and with VR you could get away with a stop or two making it more or less f/2.8 anyway.
If you're more worried about the fast aperture at the longer focal lengths of 35-50mm then just get the 50mm f/1.8

The 50mm is exactly what you want: Handheld fast focusing in low light and it's pin sharp.

Seems a bit silly to spend ~£250 on something you already have when you could save yourself the best part of £200 and get exactly what you want. This is from someone with a 18-200VR and 50mm f/1.8 by the way.

I've used the Sigma on a 400D quite a bit and I'm a massive fan of it (Sigma's styling mostly). But I have just bought the Tamron version for my D50 and it's really great, so therefore I recommend the Tamron.

But you can always go into a shop and try both?

But at the end of the day, even an f1 lens will not shine light on your subject. Consider buying a flash instead. I have the SB-600 and it makes indoor photos a constant success.
