Mondeo Mk2 Aircon Stuck on HOT!

My aircon was working fine, used to blow nice and cold and no complaints.

I used it on the hottest setting the other night for the first time to warm the car quickly, now it seems to of got stuck in boiling hot mode though as at any temperature setting it blows very hot air.

Any ideas?

Iirc the switch resistor pack has a habit of going on these, sometimes taking the wiring with it :(
It has already been changed on mine, it pretty much goes on every Mk2. It controls the speed though, I think the heat is controlled with vacuum pipes so maybe one of these has split/fallen off?

This problem has now come back.

I believe the heat control works on a vacuum system which then controls a motor which then somehow controls the heat level.

I have no idea where this component is located and no real idea how to cure the problem.

I have had the problem on and off a few times since last winter and turning the knob to hot->cold quickly a few times sorted it but now it's stuck good on SUPER HOT!

Please assist as I have a fair few miles to do this weekend!

EDIT - I quote a result from a Google search:

Many Thanks for you reply. I know there is a vacumn pump that operates the lever for the flap control in the heater box. But it does not seem to operate the lever properly, may have to take it off and try it manually. Good luck with you problem. Thanks

Does anybody know where the heater box resides?

Is it the cylindrical looking thing behind the glovebox?

How does that explain it not working on cold at all?

If it didn't get hot then I would agree, but surely it uses outside or cabin air for cold?

I think the air still comes through the matrix, so if the control valve is knackered, the only option you'll get is hot air because the engine coolant is running through it.

I took these pics when I took my Ghia X all apart. You can see the vacuum pipes in the middle and the silver dome things on the right are what they connect to.

The dome on the right of the heaterbox operates fine as I can see it moving and it controls heater direction. I cannot make the dome on the left of the heaterbox move, If I force it by hand the air makes a different sound although heat and direction do not seem to be adjusted. I cannot figure what it's for.

BUMP!

I have the dash 1/2 apart at the moment.

The heat controls are all electrical, only the position and flow controls have vacuum systems.

The switch has 3-pins on the back and obviously the connector has 3 pins too.

1 = 12v
2 = 8-9v
3 = 0v

I do not know what each pin is for. Any idea?

As there is voltage reaching the switch I am thinking perhaps the switch is faulty?

I am trying to find out how to test the switch (I guess it's just a variable resistor?).

Isn't it an electric flap jobbie, the flap directs the air to the relevant place, e.g part through matrix, part not. The angle decides which route the air takes and the blend adjusts the temperature. The heater matrix is always hot is it not?

Find a scrap one with a functioning adjuster.

PS try Ford parts desk, they have full schematic diagrams and will usually help you find the offending part if you ask nicely based on common customer requests and symptoms.

Either the fan settings, or to position a bi-metalic motor.

Thanks chaps. I have found the offending motor and I think the flap must have jammed open as I forced it a little by hand and it's now working fine.

I am pretty sure it will jam again but untill then I cannot investigate further. Next time I will carefully prise the motor off of the flap and try and move the motor independantly.

Tesla, seeing the pics of your old Mondeo reminded me of the thread you started about how it got written off by someone going into the back of you. Seems ages ago, how long ago was it out of interest?
