Yup classic place to talk about pets...on a computer forum. Ah well!

After reading a thread on here the other day about homemade dog food it got me thinking about what we feed our cat. Especially since she has started to refuse to eat tinned food. I'm sure most of what goes into it isn't really meat or particularly nutritious and it wouldn't take that much time or money to give her a better diet.

I was just wondering if any one her makes their own cat food. From reading around the net it sounds like you have to add the odd vitamin to stop your cat dissolving.

Used to feed the cat tins of tuna sometimes when I ran out of cat food and money. Think it was ok to do it now and again but was a bit too much for the cat to eat it every meal...made their poos runny IIRC:eek:

my cat often has tuna, sardines, chicken, ham, the usual but she loves walkers cheese and onion crips

You normally find that the meat in (decent) cat food is of a pretty good quality, all the managers at pedigree have to taste the cat food everyday, part of their contract.

Otis loves cheese for some reason, and flapjack. Not really a balanced diet though. She certainly won't eat what she's given. She refused tinned food for 2 days which isn't very good for her so we've given up and she's on pouches again. Which she inhales!

Apparently you need to be a bit careful with tuna as they are full of mercury which builds up and gives the problems if they are fed it constantly.

the slightly absurd thing is that until recently she refused to eat anything but asda and sainsburies own cat food. Whiskas or anything like that didn't get a look in. Believe me I bought a tin of everything in the shop and she didn't like them. These pouches are only sainsburies own.

Our cat is a bit spoiled now, although he'll still eat cat biscuits/pouch food he prefers the real meat cuts slices that I have on my sarnies :-)

I'm gonna eat you little fishy...

I have 2 cats. 1 of them likes to eat whatever we are eating and will eat some random things (as well as meat/cheese) like bread, scones, crisps, chips.
The other cat wont touch any human food (we've tried giving her a little bit of steak - but she wouldnt eat it???)

Well you can feed her/him on Sardines, Mackerel, Tuna and anything fishy. Try to avoid beef, most meat eating animals are sensitive to meat.

The websites you've read about supplementing is true, though its not as hard as you think, you just need to get the balance right. I'd suggest you talk to a vet first and find out what a cat needs everyday and just try to match the levels.

They are not bad for natural food.

Poor cat :(

Scones are full of sugar, crisps are full of bad fat and salt and chips, well.... oh and steak, when do cats get steak in the wild....

Tinned tuna contains loads of mercury or something. It's alright every now and then but too much will poison your cat.

I used to keep some tesco value prawns in my freezer that I gave to my cat for a meal every now and then. I got her bits of cooked chicken when I was at the supermarket. Miss my cat :(

you have now entered the life of one of those odd women with seven cats called Mr. Biggles, and give them birthday parties.

I recommend you take your self and Mr biggles into the bath with the toaster.

Lets face it. Most cats have 4 people who think they are the owner. Chances are it's being spoiled by a neighbour.

smoked salmon is on offer in one of the supermarkets at the mo, about £3 a pack always is around Christmas.
