I'm going to live forever.

Oh, ok. I was going down the infinite number of possibilities = infinite number of universes route after weringos "infinite number of possibilities" comment.

I'll take my infinite universes elsewhere :)

Weringo was saying there was an infinite number of things that could have happened before you were born. That isn't the case, by definition there cannot be an infinite number of things in the past.

On this theory, another universe would just happen to be exactly the same as this one - it would have been created in the same way, our planet would be exactly the same design, right down to the position of the smallest grain of sand, and we would have evolved in exactly the same way, with every person living the exact same life as on this planet, and living out every moment in exactly the same way, with every choice the same, this forum would exist and every character of every thread would be the same. All of this exactly the same for billions of years, only for me to go and spoil it in that universe by forgetting the full stop at the end of this post.

If everything was the same up until a particular point then that would be one universe that diverged at that point.

Not spoiled, just diverged.

There are two theories on that. It could be that at one choice both are taken, and one Universe diverges from that choice, the other theory states that there is already in existence a finite amount of universes and that each one covers the divergence in choice.

On the new Ricky Gervais dvd Fame there's an extra where Karl Pilkington his mate and fool meets a guy who thinks he can live for ever. That was quite interesting worth a watch if you've got the dvd and didn't see that extra.

you know what this reminds me of?....

Some animals are already immortal anyway, like the hydra. I think we have a much better chance of immortality with biology rather than physics. ;)

Still waiting for proof that they're immortal, rather than just not showing signs of ageing ;)

Ignoring the wild & wacky theoretical stuff, some (very over-optimistic IMO) scientists believe that the first person to live forever (or at least, a very long time) may already have been born. Progress in the science of ageing and gene manipulation is progressing nicely behind the scenes.

It's a bit late for those of us the wrong side of 40 to see any benefits (we'll be too far down the road to extinction to benefit significantly from any genetic tweaking & cleansing) but some of the younger teenagers here might just get to live to be 150 or so.

I advise them to buy a house well away from the coast if they plan on living that long. :-)

Im sorry but I would consider a hydras an insect at most. Its microscopic and requires a microscope. how can you consider it an animal?

Well it's in the Animalia kingdom according to that wikipedia link so that would make it an animal and as it doesn't have 6 legs and a thorax so it's certainly no insect!
