Television License

They work from a database of every household and if your address shows as not having a licence you get the letter. They have no way of knowing if you have a TV, they just assume in this day and age everyone has. If they knock on your door then just say you don't have a TV, they have no power of entry and you can only be find or taken to court if you are actually caught watching the TV or admit to watching a program.

We had a license last year at uni, only needed one as it was shared tenancy...all year we got threatening letters etc, gave up phoning in the end and just let them send us the crap - nothing happened bout it

When you buy TV equipment, they ask for your address.

Someone probably made one up on the spot and it happened to be your postcode, but they messed up the address.

ah that makes sense actually i bought a freeview box from argos.

I never realised that when they ask for my postcode that infact they are passing my information on to the tv people

Whatever you do, if the people do come around, do not let them into your house. I'm pretty sure that if you let them in once, they are allowed to force entry into your house any time in the future.

If you have a TV and you can prove you have no ability to use it for receiving TV signals through either an aerial or a satellite dish you have no problem. For example you are fully within your rights to request a visit from an inspector.

PS - No detector vans ever existed, the technology to find out if you are receiving TV signals in your house doesn't exist, it was all a big ruse by TV licensing to get people to cough up.

Closest real thing thing to a detector van was a transit with an aerial on the roof as a couple of inspectors in the back to go knocking on doors.

What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one of our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

Versus Top Gear, Planet Earth, Wimbledon coverage, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, QI, HIGNFY, Mock the Week, Match of the Day and even watching films without any adverts. BBC programming wins, you shouldn't be watching Saturday night TV anyway, it's rubbish! :p

Well the woman likes them, so sadly im forced to endure the torture of these crappy shows.

Wimbledon is good? It always helped me fall asleep.

its actually worrying , because what chance is there that once this becomes main stream that the law chanegs to any1 with a computer needs a license ? :(

Not quite true, because owning the equipment does not require a licence. using said equipment to view material that falls under the licence is the offence, and that has to be proven. The burden of proof falls on the licencing people.

Blimey - a whole month has passed since the last TV license thread.
Must be a bit of a record.

This thread of course has all of the usual posts:

"TV License should be abolished"
"TV License is fair enough"
"I don't pay mine and I've never been caught"
"I just slam the door in der face or punch dum" - the bravado post.

Oh and as to the person who doesn't think warrants are issued by courts.
Yes they are - and on a quite regular basis.
All they need is "good reason" to believe you are using a television without a license and the courts will happily issue a warrant.

I'd be interested to know exactly what the "good reason" is, as if you dont speak to them or let them in, the only reason they have is simply "well most people have a TV" which obviously dosent wash,

They write to individuals who do "not" have a TV license when as long as someone in the house has does have a license you are covered.

I bought 4 TV's 18 months ago and when I received the first letter I phoned up to be told that even though I had notified them that the license was in my wifes name I would still get another 3 letters!!!

There was a gent near Inverness quite a few years ago who was taken to court for not paying his tv license... even though it was proven that he couldn't actually receive terrestrial television. He won, of course...

To sell a TV you have to inform the TV licensing by law of who bought said item, they don't use it to send you spam (orly), could never get this through to the thick people with Tin Foil hats when I was on the till.

Just do what they ask, write to them to inform them you don't watch tv on your tv and they will stop bothering you.

But I want to earn some dollar, not necessarily for profit (for legal reasons).

But if an agency so hell bent on scarring Joe Blogs into paying up then why would they not use a damming piece of evidence like search warrants and prosecutions? Because they are shockingly low.

Our student house actually got visited by a tv license man after receiving various threats by letter.
He was infact a very normal and nice seeming gentleman.
Retarded housemate let him through the door though.....and into his room where he has a big old CRT on display. The TV license man asked him some questions and told him to buy a lisence.

Thanks for that John Motson...
