I've never worn a suit in my life . .

Never go to an interview without a suit unless you have specifically been told to dress down/casual. This isn't opinion, it's fact ;)

No it's not.

If I'm interviewing for positions as I come to the end of a contract I go in whatever I happen to be wearing for work that day. If I wear a suit for my current role then I wear a suit for my interview, if I wear jeans for my current role then that's what I wear for interview. I do, however, explain why I'm dressed down if it's a business dress environment.

It's never held me back.

However, if you beleive that you are expected to turn up smartly then you should turn up smartly, you dress according to your interpretation of the business, the role and their expectations.

Black shirts rock - as casual wear with jeans, not with suits though, just wrong.

For the interview - M&S, dark blue single breasted, white shirt, sober tie, black shoes and belt. Job done.

i have 5 suits. as i wear them day to day for work.

i belive the smartest look has to be pin stripe suit (today i have black suit with kinda gold pin stripe.

have to agree with sqaure toe shoes. and brown shoes. no go area. however black shirt can look pretty smart. i do wear black suit with black shirt to work time to time. but i wouldnt to an interview.

Hahahaha

And I bet you looked cool without a suit. You really think you're gonna make your mark dressed like every other candidate - blad your way out of wearing a suit and they'll recognise your initiative

Yup. You will make your mark. As the one who didn't bother to make the effort for an interview.

Ive only ever had jobs in retail. But both times I wore a suit. First time was a job in a sports shop, so i went without the tie. Second was for a department store and it was remarked upon ("You come across as someone who always makes the effort and presents himself well" or something like that) and the interview went brilliantly. I'd say it's almost always important to wear a suit, and if your unsure, perhaps just ask them when they phone to offer you the interview.

RE: Belts. I always wear a belt with trousers and shirt. Mainly because I'm required to wear black shirt/trousers though and don't have a great body shape, so a belt with a silver buckle kind of helps break it up a bit :D Have a brown belt, but I only wear it with jeans.

I'm not going to give you any suit advice as you have had plenty so far.

But, from your initial post, you say that there is "something very different about me, what I've done and there's a lot more than meets the eye".

It could be risky, but what if you went in a clean t-shirt and jeans? You are student and the people interviewing you, were exactly the same at some stage. If they ask you why you didnt fancy dressing up, tell them that you "believe you are ideal for the role, have all the relevant credentials and that you didnt think wearing a suit should have any bearing on whether or not you get hired." (pause) Then tell them, "That, I dont own a suit and am flat broke."

No no no no no.

No.

I interview people and i'm looking for people to integrate with the environment. If its a suit workplace its suit interviews.

If its a creative role then fair enough but most professional IT roles are not creative.

It's now time to buy one, I received the following email:

A number of friends were declined and I don't know anyone who's been called for an interview yet. When my friends were contacted they told, that over 1500 applications had been received and the number of places are very limited for the position. My peers had told me I was wasting my time, as my chances were weak. I obviously didn't have none of that . . . . my placement tutor said there's something very different about me, what I've done and there's a lot more than meets the eye. I did spend a number of days working some of the toughest questions for the application form.

Wow! is all I can say. It's the Software Development department over at the Mini plant, that produces all the Mini's in the world.

I've always blagged my way out of wearing a suit at weddings and large events, but now I have no choice but to get one. Any recommendations on brands/places to try and what's a winning combination?

Go for it dude, no advice on the dress code for you, but i do out of hours support for their servers, sub contracted through hp. And the full time staff get a nice discount on cars ;)

My main advice is make sure your shoes are upto scratch, i always look at peoples shoes first off when interviewing ;) apperance means a lot as do small details. Firm hand shake and keep eye contact lol.

Christ im spouting interview tips now Good luck and go for it.

Slaters is good.

I will agree there mate! Since you wont iknow much yourself about the correct fit etc then Slaters should be one of your first ports of call! I used to work there for around 2 and a half years, learned a lot about suits from that ;) You get great value for money and one of the more important things....free alterations! Now this is essential as the ammount of suits I see while walking about Glasgow which are the wrong fit are horrendous! Also they now offer a student discount of 10% which again is another good perk! Just tell the advisor who is helping you what it's for and your budget and you will get sorted out no problem ;)
Definately take a trip to Slaters if you can

Something everyone seems to be overlooking is the simple thing of how many interviews is the OP actually going to attend?

I've applied to many IT companies, and hopefully will get interviews with a few, that means I'm going to need something that looks and feels good. I actually need to buy one soon thinking about it.
I'm prepared to spend a fair bit to get something that fits properly and looks good, so should all students at intern placement/graduate placement level.

I know my house mates will not spend so much on their clothing and I know if I was to go to the same company for an interview as them I'd have a better chance, partly because I care about wearing a decent suit, and partly because I've actually worked unlike all of them. :p

Nearest one is 32 mile trip. Is it really worth the trip? How much would a decent custom fit one set me back?

Do carry on, please :)

I recently had a couple of interviews. I looked around M&S and various other places, but I didn't like the style of the jacket sleeves. So I found a Slaters shop and walked in. The guy there was fantastic, he guessed my waist and leg measurements and was really helpful.

I realise you've said to jrodga2k5 you're 32 miles away from a nearest store, but i'd recommend them. The guy said they'd adjust the sleeves and anything else if I needed it. But this guy found a suit that fitted great and I was able to simply walk out the shop.

Mine was around the £200 mark I think, maybe a little more. I didn't like the look of the sub £100 suits, and wanted to impress as much as I could at my interviews. Although on the 2nd, it was a friday and the two staff who interviewed me were dressed down. So I felt like a right penguin sitting talking with them.

Best of luck! :)

Just got this today at M&S, £80 for both jacket and trousers. I think it would do what the OP needs and look quite smart too. I did try on a pure black one, look odd on me with my skin and hair colour, especially with a white shirt on, looks like someone died or something. The one i ended up with has blue strips, hard to see in the small pic.

This is the one I got for £55 which was jacket only (already got matching trousers) I wear this to work or to casual but formal events/meetings etc

And a less casual one for interviews etc - I think it's good to have a look around as lots of shops have loads of designs at various prices!
