Anyone ever bought one of OCUK Ultima systems?

Hi there

I have posted before here about the Ultima range of systems and I am looking to purchase either one of these or build myself in the coming weeks. Thing is, I cannot find any reviews anywhere of these OCUK overclocked Ultima series. They have virtually all the components I would buy anyway, so why not build myself? I know each component will have its own warranty but I would assume that OCUK will have their warranty in addition and this is just another bit of reassurance for me since I am not too confident that I could build a stable system and be able to troubleshoot it if it went down.

I would appreciate any views/help you might be able to give me

Thanks

Personally, it sounds like you are the text book target customer for those pc's, you want a high grade pc built with recognised quality parts, but dont want to get too invlved in the tech side of it. I say go for it.

For me, if I look over the specs I just keep thinking, I want ram X, not ram Y, and that mobo should be an XYZ with an ABC.

So I have to go self built, because I just wouldnt be happy otherwise.
If you can live with that ugly case, then I say go for it.

Friend of mine got one of those, and he is happy with his PC. Depends how geeky you want to get with overclocking, or whether you get enjoyment out of choosing and building each part.

Or whether you just want to plug it in and start playing with Crysis :)

I was looking over them and frankly they look like really great systems. One of the main problems with most pre-builts is they have off parts sometimes like motherboards that will not give you oc options and such. might have a great vid card but a crappy PSU or weird cases that only allow certain PSU sizes and such.

Id honestly say if your not comfortable with building your own then those look like pretty good deals. All the parts in them look like solid brands and would allow for self upgrading down the road if needed. Just stear clear from the HP's and off brands you see down at your local electronic stores.

Snap, you were me about 15 months ago..

Originally I ordered from another custom PC site, big mistake...Got my money back after a few heated phonecalls..

Ordered I think it was a Ultima system Monday, delivered Tuesday..Didn't expect it to arrive so quickly i didnt even know what it was untill I opened it..

But I was contemplating building my own, never built one before, but semi competent around hardware.

It worked straight out the box, still going strong, 1 minus point was they didnt connect the front USB and firewire ports..But I can let it slide. :)

If and when I decide to get a new pc, I would prolly buy another pre built from OC..I was mega chuffed it came next day, when I waited a month for the previous one, and it didnt work properly either..

For me paying a little bit extra for something thats guranteed to work is worth it..

As has been said depends on you if you want to build your own and how technical you are if it doesnt work.

But I bought an Ultima, I think it was and I'm happy with it..

Thanks for your comments, everyone, they have been really helpful.

Just to reply to some of your comments.

There is no way I would buy a PC on the high street - I do have quite a bit of experience of PCs over the last 12 yrs and have built two a few years ago but my main concern is OCing.

From reading these forums, magazines etc the quad core obviously is very oc'able as are modern mobos and ram its just I'm an OC virgin although keen to learn! Thing is, if I buy it already OCed the shop will stand over it should there be problems whereas if I do the OCing, I run the risk of destroying my new kit.

I did contact OCUK about changing that case to a P182 and paying the difference but I was told it wasn't possible and I do think the 900 is an ugly case even if its very highly regarded. SO that is another thing in favour of a self build.

I hope to spec a system later and hopefully get some feedback from you guys. The thing I am least certain about is which mobo and ram ie what do I need and what brands do I buy. TBH i am unlikely to really push the OC of any system I buy given my inexperience. Anyway, thanks again.

I nearly bought one as I didn't actually want to build it. I know I can do it, so it isn't fun. Just another thing I had to do. Besides, they only charge about <£100 I think for putting it together. Bargain!

They are great "out of the box" systems. Saves the customer the hassle of trying to find components that are compatible, uses all high end quality components, are pre-overclocked - so the customer doesn't need to do it, are upgradable without voiding a warranty, and comes with a 12 month OcUK warranty with access to tech support.

Excellent choice for people wanting a hassle free high end system, which few competitors can match, if any.

Have you experience of their after sales? Would you def recommend them?

The line of PCs is continually updated with little tweaks as products mature and drivers get better which keeps them as one of the best systems you can buy at the time.

They are all built to order so there is no risk of having 10 out of date computers with buyers to find so the specs are always right up there.

The systems are also all off the shelf with nothing locked down so there are no limits to how you can update the system.

The 900 case will surprise most people, if you ignore the looks from a function point of view it is a very capable case.

spiki if you are interested in one of the systems phone the sales line up on 0870 443 0880 and have a chat about it if you like, can ask to speak to me and I can certainly answer any questions you may have on the system.

That point on little tweaks & up to date drivers makes them even more attractive..still find that case an eyesore though! I may ring them and discuss rather than enquiring via web notes as I did originally.

I work there and build these for a living so yes. ;)
a lot of people may dislike the 900 case but, personally I think it looks great - especially if cable modded. It certainly provides exceptional cooling and is ideal for the Ultima range.

You can always change the case yourself further down the line, or a large brown bag with holes may be in order. :)

Pop a call in and it should answer your questions, just have to apologise for my voice if you get me as I have a nice cold on the way.

The Ultima systems are literally just computers made by enthusiasts who make dozens of systems a week, what makes it different from a production line computer. The cable tidying is never the same on two!

Thanks Yewen & dr sarf. The reason for the change of case, apart from the shape of it, is that I am not really interested in an illuminated system, window panel etc. I would like something a bit more subtle. Don't really fancy buying another case for many reasons - its been difficult enough to justify to my wife why I need a new puter in the first place without forking out more on another case! Just out of interest, how is the cabling done? Is it a neat job? But, maybe a phone call to the shop about the case would be best.

It is a neat job although literally each engineer has their own way of doing things, it is a very custom job with the cabling but they are all tidy for airflow, shipping and obviously because there is a window on the side!

Thanks Yewen - you've been most helpful and I hope to take you up on this.

No problem, I will probably be on the technical support line myself but anyone who answers the call will certainly know more than enough about the systems to answer your questions or will be in arms reach of someone who can. :)

Can't ask for better. Thanks again.
