I desperately need a new car. Well I say new but newer than my crappy 1.4 Polo P Reg, which is dying. The engine keeps cutting out when dropping down gears (quite dangerous when turning into junctions and losing your power steering) and no one can tell me what the cause is. Anyway, I have had it 2 years since I started driving and I also want something newer and a little more powerful.

So with a budget of around 3k - a little more if i can part x mine. What can you lot suggest?

As you can tell I don't really know much about cars or what you can expect to buy for that kind of money. But I dont want to go in with my eyes closed like when I bought the Polo. I will consider anything.

I suppose I should have said. What year and mileage can i expect for 3k on any car you recommend. I don't want to get ripped off.

Mondeo? - £3k would buy a nice Ghia with all the toys. :)

I'd want one with about 60k on the clock for that sort of cash I suppose, Fox (and a few others) I'm sure will advise you further on value for Mondeo money. :)

What sort of thing are you looking for overall?

Cheap to insure?
Cheap running costs?
5 door or 3 door?
Estate?
Worried about the MPG?
Small car or larger car?

Do you have any kind of preference on a car or any special requirements?

Insurance obviously needs to be reasonable no more than £700-£800 really. 2 years no claims should help with that. Not to fussed on fuel economy, but dont want silly expensive running costs.

I don't want an estate.

I would prefer 3 door but that's not essential.

Size of car doesn't matter too much either.

Ok i've been looking at cars over the weekend and have upped my budget. I came across a Skoda Octavia vRS. I've never really thought about one of these before but I love it. It seems over priced considering the mileage and age according to Parkers. Do you think a dealer would lower their price to match Parkers guide price? If so I will be taking a test drive in this.

Clicky

Does anyone know what the running costs are like for these cars?

Also again, do dealers tend to drop their prices to match Parkers?

sounds like your idle control thinger is dead (happened on a old car of mine) find yourself a local garage instead of a VW place and get them to have a look at it - as long as the mileage and condition isn't too bad it'll be worth getting it fixed for the part-ex value :-)

Idle air control valve?

Apparently part of the throttle body.
