Texting to south africa?

Very close friend of mine flew to south africa for a year yesterday, and im looking for the cheapest way to text/phone there?
she has wireless so maybe some sort of skype phone that texts?

Msn or email. The cost through gprs would be almost nothing.

She doesn't have a laptop at the moment, just a wireless connection from a local church,

That was the idea.

I can send emails on my mobile for less than 1p. Hard to believe people still use text messaging these days when your limited to 160 characters and they cost upto 10p. Since she'll be using wifi though, emails and msn will cost nothing.

If she has her english sim card then text to that. Its cheaper for her to reply to you from a PAYG south african SIM card to your english mobile.
This is how I text my GF who is over there till July. She bought a cheap mobile for £50 from a shop out there to receive the texts I send her.
Its long winded but it works out ok.
