As title do you think I should wait ?
I know its impossible to say accurately but do you think there will be a big price hike on the 9 series compared to the 8 series?
I was hoping to order a new pc this week but this dillema is holding me back

So thats a premium of around £140 - £160 over a current 8800 gtx
Hmm decisions decisions
I really need some advice on this as im totally unsure of what to do

Its not a premium of £160 over the GTX the GTX has dropped a lot recently because of the 8800GT and 8800GTS, however 2 months ago the prices were much higher. The 9800GX2 one should be 30% better than the ultra, then there should be better ones for more monies later.

Anyone know if the 9800GX2 needs SLi support in programs/games? or does it do it in hardware?

The cheapest GTX I can see on overclockers is £240 so the £160 premium seems about right But I suppose if Its going to be a 30 % increase over an ultra thats a small price to pay really

I am in the same position here - buy GTX now or wait.

How long is the 'wait' part as I am out of the loop on release dates?

I wouldn't bother, your only going to be buying another 8800 GTX, just on a smaller die, and called a 9 series instead, as the 9 series are only refreshes of the cards we already have, and they aint gona be worth £400 being over 1 year old tech imo.

The G100 is the proper next gen, or GT200 i think they are going to be called now, which are supposedly due around the middle of the year along with ATi's next one R700.

9800GX2 is supposidly the 14th Feb.

3870X2 is supposidly the 28th Jan.

But it is anyones guess really as nothing official has been announced.

I would never get an 8800GTX at this time untill we see the above. The 9800GX2 is just 2x 8800GTS, the actual 9800GTX could be twice as fast as the 9800GX2, the specs do look impressive but dunno about twice as fast. The 3870X2 looks more intresting, competetive card from ATi with 2 3870XT chips on one PCB. The 9800GX2 will be faster we do know that now and it will also most likely be more expensive than the 3870X2.

Wait for benchmarks from the 9800 GX2 and the 3870 X2.

I know the 7950GX2 was maligned because it eventually didn't live up to the hype, but no need to bury the 9800GX2 in the same grave without hard numbers to warrant the digging :p

I can see the logic in waiting to see what the new cards can do BUT How much are they going to be I mean are we looking at current ultra prices ???? Plus I cant wait too long as the card is going to be in my new rig and im getting real impatient now :)

The 3870X2 hopefully will be around £250 but I imagine it'll be hitting 300+ and the GX2 hitting 350-400+.

why do they do this to me, everytime i think "ah, its time for an upgrade!" they bring out a new card a week or two down the line :(

Exactly why they do it ^^ :p.

Happens to us all though. Just learn from it and keep your ear to the ground when going to make a purchase from now on.
