BBC Four has been showing a mini series on the life of the motorway, see if you can watch a repeat it's really interesting.

I missed the 1st one, but the 2nd show is about the motorways achievements and the way it changed the country (Longer commute to work / National Lorry Network). The final show is how protests stopped motorway plans going ahead, which is a shame as the final plans were really impressive. Parts of the M25 were planned to have 14 lanes!

Then Labour got in and scrapped loads of road schemes to get an easy vote pleaser.

When you think that motorways were originally designed with 3 lanes each way when their was sod all traffic we should really have at least 6 each way now.

Sadly the days of major road schemes like that are long gone, it's all green now and roads are evil etc etc.

Worth a watch. :D

Just incase this is a serious thread..

Before Motorways, people used A roads to get around - Cornwall to Birmingham for example was the A38. These were a nuisance as there were no bypasses either - so they went right through the centre of every single city. It took ages to get places. Society was rather different then - you would live and work in the same town and most people used the train to travel any further than the next town. Cars were also not really up to long journeys anyway.

Well if you aren't doing it on purpose then you are possibly one of the most spectacularly retarded people I can ever recall encountering, online or in real life.
