Metallica, new album on the way (discussion)

I can honestly say I've never met anyone or heard of anyone that was like "oh yea, i was into Metallica and Slayer last summer"

you must be that guy.

Thats one of my pet hates.
People who say 'I grew out of that'.
The music I was listening to at 12 (Northern Soul, Motown, Reggae) is still a part of me now even though my tastes are more Devildriver and Slayer.

metallica are good when your 12 but when your a little older, say 14 you realize it's total crap.

Is this coming from someone who was sticking up for Babyshambles/Pete Doherty in a thread not long back?

I take it you've never been to a classic metal/rock gig then? If you have you'd realise the diversity of the fans compared to indie/pop concerts?

He was trolling in that thread and you just fell for it again.

Metallica are a great band with Ride The Lightning and And Justice For All their finest works, but S & M and St Anger saw them deviate too much in my opinion.

I really can't understand why so many people hate Load and Reload, whilst they're not quite up to the standard of their earlier work, they're well worthy of the Metallica name.

I really hope they do produce an album worth listening to, otherwise, as previously stated, they may well lose a few more fans.

i know i don't care whether they win or lose more fans, tough titty on those who believe they should have released another ten 'Master of puppets'. St.Anger was an amazing record which captured the mood and frustration of what they had endured and been through leading up to it.

they have nothing to prove to anyone, they could have easily packed it all in and lived off their millions. i for one, cannot wait to hear their new material, they haven't disappointed me so far and they keep re-inventing and developing their sound, and i look forward to struggling with fumbling fingers trying to play along.

I saw some band last month on the 10th, they were pretty big in the 70's.

It was okay, nothing special. They were no Doherty, Petes.

Metallica have done a good song or two... almost 30 years ago now.

Do you think James,Kirk et all will be able to pull off a decent thrash album? I would sell my right thumb in order for them to bash out another RTL (best, closely followed by Justice) but I can't see there's any way they could do it :( Please prove me wrong, although ST Inker was supposed to be a hark back to the Bay Area Thrash days wasn't it.. who gave Lars a Roses tin for his snare though :/

It's funny that everyone always hates the tinny snare but plenty of other bands have used it and it sounds just right on their respective albums. Is it that we have grown so used to Lars drum sound and we all went "wtf is that!!?" or was it down to crappy production which is something i cant fault about Bob Rock(even though i hate his guts for thinking he was the fifth metallica member:rolleyes:)

Kill Em All : was like any other NWOBHM album but good
Ride The Lightning : was marginally better
Master Of Puppets : was and still is bloody awesome
And Justice for All : was excellent (glad I've got the bass version somebody did)
Metallica : won't be bettered
Load - oh dear
Reload - oh dear dear
Garage : 50/50, some good some bad
S & M : really nothing to do with Metallica, it was all about Kamen
St Anger - oops

Am I the only one who didn't like the Metallica/Black album? Apart from a few tracks such as Enter Sandman, but the rest seem very dark, depressing, and just drone on.

Hmm, maybe it just doesn't sound right sat in the mix where it is - our drummer hates it and refuses to listen to "that" album just because of that.. I can appreciate what he's saying as I really dislike the rhythm guitar sound in general :(

As they have a new producer as well and a very good base player, and they have got other their demons (well James's really ;) ) I believe that this album will be very good, I doubt it will be of the ilk of MoP but it won't be far off, I wouldn't really listen to the "new songs" on Youtube as they were pre production and played live.

Just wait and listen.

Oh and I heard they are going back to proper tuning, ie Eb or straight E instead of daft low sounding stuff like St Anger.

Lets hope so :)

kill em all isnt new wave dmpoole :/

Ah bless him.
No its NWOBHM - New Wave Of British Heavy Metal which I put in my original post.

For those that don't know :
During the mid to late 70's rock & metal was slowly dieing and people like me were keeping it alive even though I was attending Sex Pistols and the Clash gigs.
An Underground rock scene started being formed by bands like Saxon, Iron Maiden, Diamond Head etc and this was later known as NWOBHM.
Lars Ulrich was so influenced by this that he ditched his tennis racket and formed a band based on NWOBHM and Kill Em All was the first album.

The thing you also have to remember is that Metallica do what they want, which is why you have such a diverse range of music from one band, you have the "thrash" as it was called on RTL and MoP, and you have the mellow stuff in comparison on the Load albums. St Anger was a heavy album, just in a different direction, but I feel it wasn't made using their full potential due to James alcohol problems and Newstead leaving. I don't think Bob Rock helped either.

What's weird about St Anger is that the studio clips in Some Kind Of Monster mainly sound miles better than the album release... Not a great collection of songs even without the production kneecapping but it had potential to at least not be rotten. The version of the album on the DVD, which I think was recorded as live takes in the studio, is miles better...

But, every time a disappointing Metallica album comes out I always think "That's them gone rubbish"- and then I see them live again and they're still fantastic. So I doubt the next album will change that... First time I saw them was at Milton Keynes in 99, after Sepultura, Symposium and Pitchshifter I was pretty much knackered and ready to go home... And by halfway through the first song (which my distorted memory tells me was Master of Puppets, but could have been anything) all doubt was gone.

So I'll listen to the album, but I'll be as much of a metallica fan after as before regardless.
