There are 100s of bands as 'good' as Oasis

For all the people who think those who don't like metal "don't understand music" etc etc blah blah, here are some examples of Oasis songs for those who think all their songs are "the same," if you honestly think they do then you're just arguing for the sake of it:

Cigarettes and Alcohol

Rock and Roll Star (Live)

Rock and Roll Star - Acoustic

Stop Crying Your Heart Out

Cast No Shadow

Meaning of Soul (Live)

Columbia (Shoegazer genre for those who know anything about it)

Champagne Supernova

Up in the Sky

Not to mention that every electric song of Oasis has an acoustic version that is performed in a completely different style.

A lot of metal bands have skilled instrumentalists, very few have skilled vocalists, which ruins the whole thing for me. That Mastadon song linked above is just laughable.
Have you tried metal vocals, day in day out? It's not easy, I can assure you. It may devoid of any kind of tune etc, but those kind of vocals can be very punishing on the throat if you don't do it properly.

Is that an argument for or against metal vocals? Of course it ruins your voice if you shout random noises day in day out.

Nobody has said that. Even the most devout of metal fans knows not everyone likes it. It's the suggestion that there's nothing to like which people are objecting to. "Metal is just noise" "Turn the distortion up and the skill level down", etc. I can see the talent in that Mastodon video but I'll never want to listen to that song again- but that's not because it's worthless, I just didn't like it.

Here's a bit of metal that displays inventiveness, instrumental talent, an actual voice with words and everything... The metal-haters still won't like it, but you never know, it might break the stereotype a little.

It ruins your voice if you do it wrong. It's neither for or against. It just takes skill to do it right day in day out.

It doesn't take skill but lots of training and you also need a voice thats suited to it.
I go on stage doing ACDC, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden etc and all need me to belt them out for 2 hours but theres no way I could do that growling/screaming for more than 5 mins.

Why is it laughable? All of them are far more accomplished musicians than anyone in Oasis.

Inventiveness? It's the same practically all the way through. Throwing a bit of syncopation in there doesn't qualify it as inventive. Singer is shouting most of the time and voice isn't particularly strong in the "singy" bits in between.

Doesn't dispel the stereotypes at all, very depressive and full of weird images and guys with long hair covered in piercings.

I'm basically the same. I was in a metal band once and vowed to scream never again.

Its quite ironic that at every gig I always get asked if my voice is OK and if I will be able to talk tomorrow but some of these guys in these metal bands can't have a throat left.
I always tell people that I train by gargling glass and some believe it :)

Like most songs, yes- it follows verse chorus verse middle eight etc. I was referring to inventiveness in terms of the music- it's a more unusual and inventive sound than (to pick an example at random) Oasis. I could find examples of the singer (Burton C Bell) actually showing off his 1337 vocal skillz but they tend not to be such obviously metal songs.

Not actually very much shouting in it though is there? And I'm not sure exactly what the imagery in the video has to do with the music

It has to do with the stereotype, which you brought up.

More unusual and inventive than Oasis? It's less mainstream so therefore less well known I suppose, but that's because it's ****.

in my (and the majority of other people's) opinion

That's all I wanted to hear, some understanding of the fact that not everyone likes the same thing. Well done.

What? I was well aware of that, the point I've been arguing is that Oasis do have a diverse range of music, even if a lot of people here can't take the time to find that out.

Anyway the original point of this thread is whether it is all luck whether bands get signed or not, and personally I reckon there's a bit of luck involved, but the rest is down to putting the effort in and actually being good.
