Well, that's not quite what you said in the original post... you asked if buying the points online was safe, not whether WEP is sufficient encryption for buying stuff online. WEP is carp, whether that be for buying things online or entering your Hotmail username and password.

The Wii can use WPA2, which is inherently more secure than WEP (although not infallible), so I'd suggest you use that instead.

isn't stuff like bank details encrypted before it leaves your computer - so it doesn't really matter about WEP/WPA/WPA2 ?

Wiis aren't vulnerable to things like keyloggers like your PC/Laptop is though, so it could even be safer!
