Ok basically just writing up the notes i took when doing my manoeuvres earlier in my driving lesson. This is what i have came up with:

Reversing around a corner.

1. Pull up to the curb leaving 1-2ft gap between the curb and the car.
2. Stop and put the handbrake on and look around. (especially the blind spot).
3. Once safe to move reverse until you can see the curb starting to bend in the rear left corner mirror. Stop and check around you.
4. When you start to move do a ¾ turn on the wheel quickly.
5. Keep reversing around the corner but make sure you watch in the left door mirror (while occasionally looking behind you) and watch the gap between the curb correcting when according. Stop every so often checking around the vehicle.
6. Once the curb enter the middle of the rear window STOP. Look around.
7. Reverse while looking behind you and keeping and even gap between you and the curb (use left wing mirror).
8. Stop handbrake.

Parallel parking.

1. Pull along side the car in front of the space you want to park in and leave a 2-3ft gap between you and the car.
2. Before moving off observe around the car. Then reverse until you can see the end/edge of the car to your left in your rear left window. Stop Observe.
3. When the car begins to move, one full left turn and reverse until the rear wheel arch in left door mirror touches the curb. Stop and observe.
4. Turn the wheel back to the right when moving and reverse until your left door mirror covers the cars rear light. Stop observe.
5. When car begins moving another quick right turn. Stop observe.
6. Once the car is straight on with the car in front then stop and observe.
7. When start moving turn the wheel one left turn and continue reversing back looking out of the rear window and left door mirror.
8. Stop handbrake.

Does this sound ok?

I have my test on Tuesday so i want to revise these two as these ones are the ones i have most trouble with.

EDIT. Im learning in a Corsa 1.2 4 door btw.

Those seem fine, you didn't mention if you're signalling left in the reverse round cornering though :p

Do you have a car you can practice in? it's always (always) best to physically practice as it sounds much harder on paper than it is in practice (even to me those notes I had to read several times to visualise it in my mind and I'm quite good at visualising a 3d scenario in my head!)

On the Parallel parking manouvre my instructor tought me "left, right right, left" whilst in a continuous slow move from the moment you line up with the parked car on your left (leaving a metre gap between you and the car). If lined up correctly a continuous movement backwards using L RR L will always line up correctly when finishing the manouvre if you've chosen a gap that isn't too tight.

Good luck in your test by the way :D

I think some members of ocuk could set up a website (or youtube account) with video tutorials on driving techniques and manouvres as everyone gets tought slightly differently with diff instructors - would be nice to see how other people do it! - might be quite handy for new drivers!

Im insured on my mums car but its a bloody Zafira and totally different techniques i have to use. Ive never been told to indicate while reversing mind.

Thanks for the Good luck aswell :p

Hmm I was taught to indicate whilst reversing round the corner so that people driving down the road you're on can anticipate your manoeuvre and slow down accordingly else they could assume you're reversing straight or just reversing onto the curb to park or something!

You do NOT indicate left when reversing left into an opening etc.

Thats what your reversing lights are for.

If theres somebody coming down the road from behind as you are reveresing are you not supposed to stop? Then carry on the manouvere when its safe?

They can assume what they like. Its the drivers responsibility to ensure its safe to reverse. Equally if your driving down the road and see a vehicle with its reversing lights on and moving then you should check your mirror then slow down and see if the vehicle in front spots you and stops as they should then carry on past when safe.

If your reversing then the OTHER vehicles have priority.

surely you can if you want to though else the instructor would not have recommended it?

Or more likely you'll need to give the DSA more money! Oh and just in case you did not know I'm an ADI.

Difference is in a year I might have one pupil who fails on a manouver and as they will happily admit its because they did it differently to what I told them/listened to friends/got advice from a forum.

Pass rate for the last 2 years is currently around 90%.

Do what your instructor tells you and if your unclear as to what he wants/means then ask him/her to clarify/explain why you should do it that way. After all you are paying for there expertise.

My instructor told me specifically to look behind me, and occasionally in the left door mirror. Actually my friend failed for relying on the door mirror too much, as in he looked in it about five times in the whole manoeuvre.

YEah your not supposed to look in the mirror too much, I always did a sly look, deffo do not use your indicators though when going round a corner..

I was always advised the opposite - use the mirror(s) as much as possible.

Especially in HGV's! :D

how much do you charge for a lesson and how much "profit" do you get?

This is relevant how? As for making a profit is that not why people work? Or am I supposed to teach people to drive for free like its a hobby? You seen the price of petrol lately have you? Who do you think is burning the fuel? Me or the Pupil? This week I paid £500 for two front tyres, pads and disc's. Now I'm not complaining about the cost but its a business so who do you think gets to pay for those ultimatly?

Oh and yes I charge more than the average in my area. You get what you pay for.

It wont be that he looked in the mirror too many times, its the fact that he neglected to make effective observations elsewhere, He probably missed something important.

You can look in the mirrors all you like. You also have to make relevant and effective observation around the car depending on what you are doing.

As for HGV well thats another story that I am about to do for the fun of it!

there are a number of reasons why an indicator is not necessary.
you are already signaling with your reverse lights,
a vehicle coming from in front may see your indicator and think you are trying to emerge and subsequently confuse them and they may try to let you out.
also drivers on approach to you will have seen you going around the corner (if at that stage) or at least seen you going towards the corner, and you shouldnt really be reversing across a junction anyway.

Yeah i looked in the mirror a fair few times to make sure i was parallel with the curb and didn't fail. Just make sure you're looking out the rear window the majority of the time.

If your taught to use a reference point out the rear window if visibility is good enough (Generally on most cars it is) then you can reverse nicely 1 1/2 foot from the kerb all the way back while looking out the rear window without needing the mirror and staying accurate.

I think if your only doing it for the profit your in the wrong job m8.

Sorry I seem to have hit a nerve for some reason ::confused::
